Found out today that my very bright headlight is in fact an LED headlight, I don't know how it's connected or even what make of unit it is. Mate of mine pointed to a fan behind the bulb housing and now I'm in a panic because I want to go back to an H4 halogen. I suspect it's a cheap Chinese POS headlight bulb.

HELP!

Why not try dismantling the unit and removing the bulb?
Could be as easy as a straight swap??

Edit: Unless it was like that from new!!

That's what I want to know, I'm planning to have a look at the weekend but I was hoping for some information from someone who has fitted one.

Coo. Never seen that. Is the fan a normal fitting for the bike? "The Boy" purchased an LED headlight for his bike, that was a straight swap. The amount of dip isn't very good, the MOT man commented....

Nope.

tldr: it's normal

Many led 'bulbs' H4s etc have integrated fans to cool them
Some have heat sink 'wicks' dangling out of the back.

As efficient as they are, leds still produce heat.
You probably wouldn't notice it on a small one but as the wattage rises so does the heat
You do get more bang for your buck with leds though
IIRC
Incandescent bulbs give around 14 lumens per watt
Vs
70 odd lumens per watt for leds
Been considering one myself but as mentioned above, the beam pattern can be iffy on some esp at MOT time.
Still might try some though

What about the connection? are the LED bulbs connected with the standard connector? That really is my main concern.

If you've got an LED with a fat arse and a fan to turbo boost its farts...

...it's probably a good one! The cheap ones have little to no heat sink and can go bang - literally - at random moments.

Unless it's faulty I'd leave it alone but if you must change it 9 times out of 10 it has the same connector as the original bulb.

AFAIK they are the same connector. However, if the assembly is LED-specific, not "original", you may find other difficulties. It's not too difficult to try an H4 in it, is it? You'll find out whether it fits/works just about straight away.

Hard to answer that as
you're the only one can see what's in there
A lot of replacement leds have a short lead with an H4 plug
ie 3x10mm male terminals
for the original H4 socket to fit into
Have a look see
making up/modding a lead to suit your choice isnt hard anyway

I can't leave it alone, the high beam is non existent, it's more like main beam plus. Also I can't see it getting through an MOT, the stop and tail light is also getting replaced because it's also LED and not as bright as a standard bulb.

I did manage to find the h4 connector, very well hidden but I located it.

You seem to be confusing dipped for main.

Dipped should be quite short focus and with a pattern only lighting the lhs higher than waist height.

Main beam lights the whole road.
