I know this is a motorcycle forum but....

If you were to buy an affordable car tomorrow (for me e.g. 8-15k), what would it be? I live in London and want something economical yet for OK trips that, sadly, don't involve the bike.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

If you've any sense, whatever you do buy should be petrol engined. I can see diesel eventually becoming restricted to
commercial use only in the very long run, but for now they are just smashing all owners with charges for all but the
very latest euro 5/6 diesel engines. But they seem to be far less stringent with petrol cars, Baths imminent "clean"
air push will see owners of some diesel vehicles as new as 2015 charged the daily charge for evil particulates whereas some
petrol engined cars as old as 2006 are still allowed in for free. So logic dictates a modern clean petrol car is the answer,
especially in London. Should have a decent drive life before you have to renew. Especially if you buy something
modern and Japanese. 8-15k will buy a lot of car.

Check the insurance rates, that'll make your deciding easier.

I'm quite happy with my Skoda Fabia. 400+ miles from a tank (mostly motorway TBF).

If I had 8-15K I'd probably go for a 'nearly new' Karoq.

Smart Roadster, super-fun, 698cc turbo, semi-auto, two seater. Nippy, economical, oh and did I mention, super-fun? You'll get a decent one for between £2k & £3k.

Posting for a mate, no bias.

Had a Seat Leon for the last 3 years. Great car, would happily have another one if I hadn't just bought a twincab for work. Will be looking for an economical runaround soon for car-type journeys for 3-5k.

Top end of your budget gets you a Hyundai Ioniq hybrid. I'm on my second one. Also live in London and use it for long trips a few times a month.

Otherwise, anything. Your budget covers 70% of cars under 3 years old.

Agree with above, I'd certainly be looking for a hybrid in your situation. £15k gets you plenty - auris, Prius, Lexus CT200h, Ioniq, even a couple of A3 E-trons, and would future proof you for a considerable amount of time yet.

We're certainly considering it for my wifes next car, a plug in hybrid rather than the 2.0 diesel superb estate she has at the minute, even though that averages 60mpg while commuting and is one of the biggest estate cars on the market.

I'd look to electric power in London, but petrol hybrid is the more safe solution that covers all bases. From an engineer's point of view though a petrol hybrid is the worst compromise between electric and petrol ICE technology.

Also remember that the next European emissions target for petrol engines will require direct injection engines to have a particulate filter fitted like diesels do, as lower speed DI petrol engines produce more particulate matter than older port injected non downsized/down speeded engines.

Living away from congestion and cities and having alot of weight to carry around and long journeys still offers alot of merit to diesel engine vehicles IMO especially in bigger and heavier vehicles or ones that are often towing or under heavy load.
