I've finally been repairing my bike luggage, damaged in last summer's off, and have progressed successfully as far as painting, at which point it's just all gone horribly wrong. Using rattle cans and knowledge gleaned from the interweb, I've painted the panniers and topcase with etcher, several coats of grey primer all good), and finally the first coat of colour (it's water-based). As is apparent from the pic below, it's gone all blotchy in places - this is the worst area. I'm guessing the problem is surface contamination; does that sound right?

What to do next - any alternative to stripping it all right back to bare plastic? Doh! Last time, after the last coat of primer, before the top coat I flattened it off with 1200-grit wet-and-dry and rinsed it down with water - was that right? (it was definitely fully dry before I sprayed the top coat)

How long did you leave it between primer and applying the top coat?

That looks like something coming up from underneath the colour layer.

It was a day between primer and the wet-and-dry, and then another day until the top coat.

That particularly bad bleb at about 8 o'clock to the circular badge recess - that was immediately obvious as I was spraying; I gave it an extra blast of blue, but no way would it 'take'.

Well if the primer looked fine before you started on the colour I guess it is contamination... probably someone sneezed on it when you weren't looking Very Happy

Something that might be worth trying is sanding it back slightly then apply several VERY thin coats to get it started.

I had a similar thing happen with some of my VFR panels and it turns out I was spraying the paint on too heavy (even though I was moving the can quickly), I sanded the problem areas back and done about 5-6 thin coats (I could still almost make out the primer), and then the paint stuck fine.... still ended up a shit job because I ran out of patience

I tend to use tack cloths and paint prep just before spraying, both dry near instant and help prevent this.
