Bikejacking - how common? (Poll)

Just curious; speaking with a colleague today, they said they get attempts (or at least, suspicious behaviour) several times a week in Manchester. I've broken down the poll options bit to include/exclude London as I think it's understood to be a recognised problem there!

For London it's mostly twist and go thefts. The scum want a convenient getaway vehicle for bag snatches and shop raids. Gears and clutches are way to much for their tiny little brains.

10 or 11 years ago me and a friend had our scooters robbed off us by a group in ladbroke grove at knife point, his was eventually found mine never turned up, probably at the bottom of a river or burnt out in a park

I have not personally been bike jacked, but last summer some kids on a stolen Triumph Tiger were trying it in the next village to mine. They made a grab for one guys keys but he managed to get away fairly easily.

The following day I nearly hit them with my car as they swerved around some traffic straight in front of me.

Basically if you live in a city centre you're high risk
If you ride stop start in a city centre often you're high risk
If you park city centre in public all day you're very high risk

Some cities pose a risk multiplier higher than others. E.g. Bradford, Birmingham, London, Manchester being some of the worst.

But that is why insurance exists.

It's interesting reading; I'm sure the areas this sort of thing happens in varies too, e.g. I'd expect (?) the rougher areas of cities to be more likely to a problem (or where commuter roads pass through them) rather than the leafy suburbs? I know some areas of Manchester, e.g. Moston, are particularly rough and you can be expected to be liberated of your push bike let along your motorcycle!

been riding from south london into central london 5 days pw for past 5 or 6 years, 2 on a 125 scooter, 3 on a 125 manual and 1 on a 600 supersport, never been attempted or seen anything and I ride through some less than pleasant areas sometimes - brixton, tulse hill, peckham, streatham etc - have heard of cars being taken at gunpoint/knife but not a bike yet, with high powered tools it is probably much easier just to take one parked up, although the main choice of weapon for driveby bag and phone snatches is a high powered scooter not a 17 year old SS saying that I was stopped by the police (random stop.....) and they asked me if someone had attempted to nick my bike yet until I pointed out it was 17 years old yet still looks relatively modern so your simple-minded street urchin probably wouldnt tell the difference between this and a new r1 or ducati (i doubt professional thieves would even think about bikejacking)
