I bought a 2005 R1 late last year, haven't ridden it much but decided to put it on the dyno today.

It's got 16k miles, has a history of some track use. Dyno figures came out peaking at 100hp at the rear wheels, nearly exactly. Apparently this may be due to a French restriction. I don't have much experience with bikes like this and it feels fast to me. Coming from a leggy bandit 600.

As far as I know the bike is a UK model, sold and registered here according to my local dealer. I need to double check engine numbers match but I'm 99% sure they do.

I've attached a photo of the dyno graph. It sounded okay while running but did seem to skip occasionally on the rear wheel. I'll be checking the numbers on the ecu when I have time to get it apart.

Does anyone have any experience with this or suggestions of what to do?

I did a quick google as this intrigued me. I found a thread on BCF (of all places) about this...

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=109526

Notice a post by a member called 'DynaMight' about halfway down...

As far as I'm aware the latter R1's are limited in the first few gears, so the power maybe limited to around 100BHP.

Although other members then disagree with this. It is flipping weird. You should have 160ish BHP at the rear on that model.

I also found this thread:

https://www.r1-forum.com/forums/161-09-14-r1-mechanical-help/629005-14b-stuck-around-100bhp.html

Which comes to the helpful conclusion that the Dyno operator is an idiot, which seems to be unlikely seeing as 100bhp is not a particularly arbitrary figure.... Weird as hell.

I also found this:

https://www.r1-forum.com/forums/4-mechanical-help/14652-how-do-i-de-restrict-euro-2002-r1.html

And this, you'll need sunglasses as it's full '90s angelfire or geocities tastic!

https://borg20014.tripod.com/service_sectionk.htm

Reading some of these it sounds like a massive can of worms. If I were you I'd be taking the VIN to Yamaha UK and asking them to confirm it's a UK bike.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look through now. It seems to be a rare problem without much conclusive help online. I found one sight with a link of how to sort it on a 5vy, but the link is broken.

I've confirmed with my local stealer that the bike is a UK model bought and registered here. I'm considering asking on a French forum/fb page to see if they can shed any light.

In regards to Dynamights post, the run was done in 5th which rules that out.

Another idea I have had is a faulty exup valve, although I'm not sure the loss of power this would cause would be so great.

Seems the French 100bhp limit was only lifted in May 2014 and it was achieved by means of a restrictor kit (imaginatively known as Le Retrofit - they must've been up all night thinking of that!) which applied to everything, new and old bikes.

Could be your bike lived in France for a while and when it came back, either the kit wasn't removed, or nobody knew it was there.

likely the valve has seized closed then...

It will need stripping and cleaning and the bushes replacing. But in doing so, and then getting a dyno run you should liberate another 60+ horses. That’s not a small amount of power!!!

I'm glad it's something simple. Will be the easiest and cheapest horses to get. Bike doesn't feel slow to me as is so will be even better

Is the valve seized half open?

On my Exup1000 the valve was seized closed and the engine started to stutter when it got to about 5000 rpm.So I have managed to open it fully and ride the bike as it is until I can find the time to drill out the mounting screws for the outside plate and clean up the bearings.

Have a look at www.yamahar.co.uk Thumbs Up Wink
