I'm still trying to figure out how he managed this, did he have an underhanded grip on the throttle or something?

Hand on upside down?

I hear of it with cars and pressing the wrong pedal.

Imagine being next after him.

"Does that mean my test is cancelled then? Or can I just ride round his corpse?"

A heavy goods vehicle test center here has a large concrete ramp for when people are tested on the HGV emergency stop - it prevents lorries going through a fence and sideways across a main road.

I wonder if they rearrange the test center testing space there to prevent folk nutting fences?

Interestingly, I recall a drinking pal of mine (and at the time DSA examiner) who did discuss this very issue when they brought mod1 in. ie. if you are testing someone on their ability to do an emergency stop on a dedicated offroad facility, you must be prepared to deal with the consequences of them failing to do so. Otherwise, there is no point in having a test. As I recall, he was mainly concerned about the swerve exercise, because if you are testing someones ability to drive directly at a cone at 50km/h and miss it. What happens if they hit it?

He was sacked a couple of months later for adversely commenting on the sexual orientation of his line manager... Doesn't mean he was wrong though (on either count).

Surely some liability on the part of the training school? One of the first things on the CBT was "roll onto the throttle, roll off onto the brake."

Maybe booked the test with no training?! One for the Darwin Awards.

I wonder if they have it on video? They must have.

With the HGV test that emergency stop is the first thing you do (and before leaving onto the highway). Fail it and you've failed the test and never make it onto a road.

He failed the emergency stop and failed to make it to the road!

There isn't a witty for this.

People die doing normal mistakes.

With all due respect a "normal mistake" is say trying to pull away in 2nd gear. I think we can be generous and give this one an "abnormal mistake" given the circumstances.

That reminds me the time I started using reverse gear shifter pattern on my motorcycles and forgeting about it after the winter break. Then in spring, I got to an intersection, put it neutral, green light, press the shifter down (2nd gear), then of I went and in the middle of the intersection, revs at about half of the rev range, I lifted the shifter (1st gear). Laughing

Not nice and luckily the road was dry and I pulled away in orderly fashion. Imagine if I tried to drag race someone and did that at however fast a ZX7R can go in the second gear and then kicking it into the 1st gear. That wouldn't be nice. Smile

He must have been unlucky to be killed by hitting a wall at modest speed, something more pointy and cutty like a fence it would be easier.
