Is anyone as shocked as I am regarding the latest price rise for the VED on bikes, £91 for what? I was so shocked by this latest price rise that I’ve started an online petition, let’s see if we can get enough signatures for a debate in parliament, give the poor dears something to do. Please sign the petition, pass it on to your friends, you know it makes sense.

Won't be signing that.

Bike VED is great value for money. All they need to do is start making it about power output and you'll regret ever signing
that short sighted petition.

Bike VED based on engine CC only.

Lorry VED based on axle numbers and weight.

Bus and Coach VED based on number of seats.

Car VED based on hugely confusing sliding scale but primariy based on Co2 output.

Notice how each vehicle class is charged on what will make the most £££ for the exchequer.

I'd just keep your head down and continue being a "novelty" road user if I were you.

No one can see your petition to see how much sense it makes.

I don't know what the OP's petition actually says, obviously, but personally I'm a bit pissed off about the £91... in days of yore, road tax for bikes was always way cheaper than than cars. Now?

Here are the official figures for my vehicles:
Bike (BMW R1200RS): CO2, 95.1 g/km; Fuel, 57.4 mpg; Road tax, £91
Car (Ford B-Max 1.0 Ecoboost): CO2, 114 g/km; Fuel 57.7 mpg; Road tax, £30

How does that make any sense?

I'm not putting my deets on something I have to register to read Laughing

Not that the government and specifically the petition website fellas don't already *have* them, but its just the principle.

Hell, I can't even be bothered to register on The Times Online to read articles that are more than three paragraphs long Rolling Eyes

But the duty isn't calculated using emission output data in both cases. If any changes were to be made to how RFL is
paid by motorcyclists it will end up being by power output and for sure it will have WAY many more tiers than the current
system. A whole new massive can of worms for those welsh berks and the government to make needlessly complicated.
Just like the complicated fucking mess car tax now is now it's calculated by emissions data. Prior to that for those of us
old enough to remember, it was simply by engine size which as you can see still has just TWO classes above 1549cc and
under 1549cc. That's way too simple and easy to understand. Wink

Four simple groups topped by a blanket and blunt 600cc and above is idiot proof. Don't let DVLA loose on KW for
fucks sake. Can you imagine.... Rolling Eyes We will have a similarly complex and unnecessarily fussy power output related
system to replace our simple four category cc based one, mark my words.

Just to add I have to tax the van at the end of the month for a flat £250 a year currently. Or equivalent to
about three years Spacker tax or twelve and a half years Scoot tax. Bikes still look way cheaper from where I'm sitting.

But that might be a tax-deductible expense, whereas many people don't have bikes that they ride for tax-deductible reasons.

If they're making bike tax more complicated then that does sound pretty damn stupid and annoying, though.

The next rate up from £30 is £125 so Freddyfruitbat gets away pretty lightly there. Mr. Green

VED rates for cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/rates-for-cars-registered-on-or-after-1-march-2001

If Freddyfruitbat's car was registered on or after 1st April 2017 then it would cost £170 for the 1st year and £145 per year after that.

I am saying that the current system needs to be left be and if they were to change it at all it would have to net them
more money not less. Subsequently a fussy and complicated power output based system would be the most likely
outcome, in my humble onion. It would make large capacity bikes at the higher end of the scale unfavourable to buy and
therefore would have the secondary effect of stealth-legislating them off the road altogether by means of harsh taxation.
The start of a slippery slope. IMO.

You do not need to pay for tax if the vehicle has a SORN.
