I'm after getting a double socket outside on the conservatory wall for some garden lights . On the inside of the wall there is a double socket .

Can I drill through the wall and just tap into the existing circuit?

If the inside double socket isn't a spur and is RCD protected, you're good to go. I've got one of these tapped into my kitchen socket circuit.

Yep that's exactly what I have done. Dunno if it's 'to regs' but it works great for a floodlight and the mower. Same type of socket as in Shaggy's link except I used a double. You could spur off the ring or add it to the ring if you have enough slack in the wire to pass though the wall.

Bit of trivia for you...

The "ring main" concept was born out of post-war shortages of copper.

For a typical mains cable, point to point, you might need 1mm diameter copper to carry a certain current but if you make it a ring from the consumer unit you can technically use half the copper (but in practice you'd probably go with a little thicker.)

That's why you need to be careful "breaking" a ring as then it turns into two separate radial circuits that can only carry half the current.

Seems odd though that only the UK would have such a system and it was devised in wartime.

You can spur off an existing ring. If going outdoors then put the spur through its own fuse/rcd.
