I've decided to bite the bullet and learn how to create PDF documents without using a third party library, so can anyone recommend a decent on-line tutorial. I've already had a look at the PDF 1.7 manual (ISO32000 ?) from Adobe which is fine as a reference document.

As to why I want to do this, I am a masochistic nerd /end.

I've always used cutepdf, it installs as a printer, so I print and choose cutepdf to create it.

I had no idea word could save to .pdf Very Happy

I use cups pdf to print to pdf, and libreoffice to create pdf's. If you're doing it programatically, you can always run libreoffice in headless mode to create pdf documents, or there are a variety of php pdf generation libraries.

I was being a bit facetious, I thought OP was doing something more technical. But my submitted PhD Thesis was simply saved from a Word document as a .pdf and I burnt to a disc.

I don't think th OP wants to make pdfs from typed word documents, I get the impression he's coming at the his from a coding perspective

Yeah, I may have been to blame. I was only replying about word being able to 'save as pdf'.

I'm sure OP wants to create pdf files with full functionality.

The libreoffice .PDF export tool is pretty flexible.

You can export to .PDF from Libreoffice draw as well as writer.

Done it!
I have now written my very own pdf building dll. Hasn't got all the pdf features, just text, jpegs and simple line drawing, but that's all I need.

Wasn't as difficult as I though it'd be .... it was much much worse.

Curious to know why you'd need such a DLL given there are so many open source solutions out there.

First rule of coding: don't re-invent the wheel... refine someone else's!

Well originally I used PdfWriter which I have to say is pretty good. Problem is since I moved to Linux/Wine I could never get the latest version to compile with MinGW, PdfWriter makes use of too may Visual Studio C++ features. Plus i'm not overloaded at work at the moment and fancied a bit of a challenge. Glad I went for it as I've learned a hell of a lot about how true type fonts and jpegs work at a low level.
