Working on a cheapo old carb. Gave it a good clean out but the engine won't start without squirting a little extra juice in the air intake. After that it'll run with a little throttle. (Revs fluctuate so there's probably an air leak but that's not important right now.)

It has an "automatic" electric choke so maybe some problem there? Before it goes in the bin any quick fix?

It's one of these:

Well, you never get to fluctuating revs if it won't start in the first place Razz

Sounds like the pilot jet is blocked. on a tiny engine , it's a very tiny orifice.

Is it a two stroke strimmer?
You can get refurb kits of diaphragm etc - usually you would have bits left over.
Not that I had much success with ours last year.

Is this the carb you had to hammer the butterfly flat on?

Having to squirt fuel in to start an engine is often more a sign of poor compression than anything. Most motors would fire up without choke in warm weather like we're having. On a 2t it can also be a sign of knackered crank seals.

No, 4 stroke 50cc. Once it's started it will run - just need to keep pissing about with the throttle to keep it running. It's a long weekend so I may as well try and get it going!

Pilot jet sounds a good bet - I'll give that another soaking.

And the prize goes to Steve!

Took it apart again, left the pilot jet soaking in carb cleaner. Made sure all the associated airways were clear...

Purring like a kitten!

Bonus fix: the fluctuating revs were just down to the AF ratio not being set correctly. All lovely now Very Happy
