When I was in the university bike club in Edinburgh, a mate used to have a route planned round the Scottish Borders which took in every ford and humpback bridge he could cram in. The only way you'll get the front wheel up on a Bantam!

My wife used to take great delight in popping the front wheel up over bridges/speedhumps on her YB100 until I pointed out that the only thing holding the fork stanchions in at full extension is friction.

I once hit the crest of a practically invisible humpback bridge at 120mph (having panic braked down from 150) on a fully luggaged up VFR750. It was halfway along a totally flat, vanishing-point straight on a totally flat, featureless area where the road went over a railway. Both wheels were in the air for an uncomfortably long period. Long enough to notice, think about and correct my slightly nose-down attitude by opening the throttle more. Got a double screetch like an aeroplane landing when the wheels touched back down.

Not recommended but works wonders for your sphincter tone.!

A mate of mine, way back, took a blind hump back bridge at full pelt, having never been there before. Think he was on his GS550. The other mate who was following him, who related this tale to me, said he had let the first mate go ahead a bit, cos he was a nutter and it was never wise to be too close to him, found him parked up on the other side of the main road he'd just steamed across, skidding and wobbling on his landing on the other side, with traffic going past either side of him. He'd pulled over, having regained control and avoiding being squished, by some miracle, put the bike on its stand, and was found sitting on the kerb with his head in his hands, shaking from head to foot Laughing

I don't care if this is entirely accurate - I have no reason not to trust the mate who told me about it, he was a level-headed, usually very understated kind of chap. But of such tales legends are made, and the first mate was certainly a legend in our little circle of bikers...just for all the wrong reasons Laughing I could write a book about his escapades.

The only unexpected air I found on the faux-cruiser was sticking my leg out while stopped for some traffic and uselessly finding fresh air above a drain cover that had sunk in the road.

Probably would have ended up dropping a real bike!

When my dad got re-married back in 2008, his best man (my uncle) told a story about them being on a bike when they were teenagers back in the early 80s.

My dad was riding with my uncle pillion, down some country lanes in Kent. They rounded a corner to see a hump back bridge some way ahead, to which my uncle said "Go for it!".

My dad went for it and they hit the bridge at about 80 odd.

The bike took off way higher than either of them had anticipated, and the bike rocked back perfectly by sheer luck, landing gracefully on the back wheel like something out of a movie. At that point my dad noticed, worryingly, that my uncle didn't appear to be on the bike any more.

After slowing a little, my dad turned around on his seat, to see my uncle, wide-eyed, perched upon the top box.

Cool story Thumbs Up

Less cool, I bunny-hopped the front wheel away from the traffic lights this morning in front of about half a dozen other bikes. The traction control on Ze Beemer acts as a crude and pretty harsh anti-wheely. A little enthusiastic on the throttle and instead of a controlled wheely, you get a hard Boing, Boing.

Your parents were obviously keen bikers, then.... what did they call your dad?
