They should have an oil change every 1ooo miles; they rarely do.
Tendency for them to get run on their side, which dont help either
Oil-Strainer by the oil-pump prone to clock if never cleaned.

Causing which to wear excessively? The Cylinder-Head or the cam-journals?
Unlike many, larger displacement SOHC Hondas of the era, the cam doesn't run 'direct' in the cylinder head. It's supported on two 'banjo' plain bearings, one at either end. These are replaceable.
Actual clinder head can 'look' rather nibbled around the cam-lobes, where they were de-flashed to make room for the lumpy-bits of the cam at manufacture; this does not mean that the cam itself has chewed the head.

Or even the softer still TD-J camn, or the even softer Chinese derivatives, oft found on e-bay.
There's no obviouse marking on them; the only sure fire way about checking them is to clock them in with a DTI... OTMH The 'full-power' 309 cam has about an extra 5mm lift over the 'Reduced Effect' cam. All have much the same actual valve timing, the 'Reduced effect' merely having lower lift at peak, the TD-J and Chinky derivatives, lower ramp-rates.
Numbers are inconveniently not in the book, so Its a case of clocking the different 'back-to-back' to get them.

No...
I eventually turned up a New-Old-Stock 309 cam on e-bay, after much much searching.
I discovered a serviceable 'used' one, in a box of bits from some-one's abandoned project; after stripping a few other T-Motors, to find either no-cam or the cam had been swapped for a Reduced-Effect or that the cam was scrap.
How desperate are you for an actual 309 spec cam? The NOS one I got probably close on a decade ago, was aprox £100 or so, I think.
Expensive compared to the £70 or so that a chinky TD-J dervivative might command, but cheap compared to having a custom cam ground, IF you can find some-one who'll take the job on.

BTT... is the cam you have a) actually a 309 spec cam? b) Is it actually knackered? c) Is it actually 'key' to the project?
The Reduced effect cam, is actually pretty good and doesn't put such load on the rockers and tappets. Small sacrifice on performance, for larger gain in reliability and serviceability.
If the performance is 'all', then it is pretty crucial, but probably only if you are working to race regs and 'have' to keep the motor under 125 or 142cc (Maximum service re-bore displacement). You, or in fact Honda, got as much or more power from the Benly engine, on the 'soft' 360 timed 233 motors, like the CD 250 U, which was the most powerful of the family, and OTMH 21bhp, just from the extra cubes... so what's the imperative here?
Personally, it would be BTT and assessing the cam you have, and the banjo bearings and the head; The actual cam would have to be pretty 'bad' and blues and chewed, for 'me' not to want to re-use. The head itself? Again, the banjo-bearings take the strain, so I'd likely replace them, and any damage to the head in that area would likely not matter.... Hmmm... dont look good.
TBH, I'd not go for one of the Chinky E-bay specials. I have done... never again! The timing is peculiarly 'soft', based on the later TD-J spec, optimised around the CV carbs that had, and I had a devils own job setting up carbs to run with it, a-n-d, it IS noteably cooler than even the TD-C spec 'Reduced Effect' cam, loath to rev out.
What do the lobes look like? have they actually sustained damage clouting the head, the cam sat cock?
Looks, in the piccie, like there is some scoring on the bearing journal and it 'may' be bad enough to have gone through the surface hardening...
I dont have metal in my mits to actually see more closely, but I would likely be loath to put that back in.... b-u-t... you got two chances, haven't you? If you scrap it, it dead metal. If you chuck it back in, is it gonna get any deader, or worse make something else dead?
Worry there is that 'if' the case hardening has started to break down, in use, accelerated wear could dump more swarf into the oil to wear other bits or clog oil-ways...... b-u-t, its no great shakes do do a few extra oil changes, which you should anyway, early on on a rebuilt engine, and sift and strian what comes out to see; or to lift the rocker cover and have a look-see, which again you'd do at post rebuild early oil-change anyway, to check the tappets.... and worset case? Noy MUCH extra effort to lift the rocker bosses and hoik another cam in after the event....
So, how much you really want or need the 309 cam in there? And how much hassle are you prepared to tolerate..... you are messin with an old Benly twin here, so the answer to that starts from a pretty high threshold, lol but still! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
