Hi, My 2002 CBR600F will not run with the main/dip lights on. If the bike is running it will cut out if the lights are turned on, if its not running you can hear the fuel pump shut off if the lights are switched on. The Indicators are not behaving either, sometimes looking like they have a poor earth at times, these have been changed a few times by the looks of the wiring. Both these faults are intermittent, and may be related. I fitted a new fully charged battery to no avail, I was wondering if this bike has a coil for the headlights which may be pulling the voltage down when the lights go on?
Any help or ideas please!

Sadly, I'm almost with Jaffa on this one. I suspect your genny/alternater is fucked and so when you turn on the lights your battery can't support everything turned on, causing everything electrical to fail.

Thanks guys.
First I will check the earths.
I will then try jumping a good car battery along with the bike and see if it shuts down with the lights on. This may prove a weak alternator, maybe.
If I still have a failure even with a back up battery I'll look to a short in the coil packs somewhere.
Will post back my findings!
Many thanks for your input.

"""I was wondering if this bike has a coil for the headlights ""
""Coil Packs"""
Called heavy duty RELAY switches operated by light duty switches.
If these short out they should blow / break a fuse.

Do the lights actually come on?

Checked the three phase alternator, all coils had less than 1 ohms resistance. Started bike and found 35 volts on each phase at tick over. Megger tested coils and found no leaks.
Battery volts prestart 12.6 volts post start 14.7 volts. Turned on indicators sidelights and brakelight and saw no drop in voltage.
Turned on dip beam and bike stops, pulled out light bulbs and tried again, bike keeps running. Suspect bad earth. Checked earth side of bulb holder to battery negative, 1 ohm. Now chasing earths and general connections. Hope that’s the end of it now..

14.7V is a bit high IMO, ideally it would be 13.8-14V at all loads
but most bikes have dumb/ ball park charging systems.
A bad earth on the regulator will drive the voltage up as will poor connection on an external sense wire if it has one.

2002 is well old enough to develop crappy grounds and connections
so I 'd start by opening/checking/cleaning every one and test for ground continuity to the battery earth terminal throughout the bike

I'm always posting this, but a jump lead from negative terminal to a bright spot would quickly give you some clues.

Have you checked the bulbs are good? One of mine went short circuit (melted internally) after the other one blew a couple of years ago.
