I work with garden machinery/hardware, I have a few regular customers who come in and buy cheap chainsaw bar and chain oil for use on there motorcycle chains, they swear by it, apparently it clings on better and they've noticed a reduction in chain stretch. Anyone tried it?

Some people use it, others use sump oil, or expensive chain lube. I've not used any one product to make an accurate comparison, all I'd say is lubing every 100 miles with (whatever) is probably better than lubing every 1000 miles with expensive stuff.

There are pro's and cons with each type used, the stickier stuff tends to fling less but being dryer and stickier can attract more crap from the road.

Yeah I agree with that, I used to use spray on chain wax, bloody awful stuff, will try the chainsaw oil though, can't hurt to give it a go I suppose.

I've just stuck my old scotoiler in the 350. Filled that with 2 stroke oil, as I believe that's basicly what scotoil is.

Clinging on better isn't necessarily a virtue imo. If it has a sticky quality that enables it to do that, this would suggest to me that, in turn, things can stick to it as well. In other words, grit and grime from the road could accumulate on side plates and perhaps from there, rollers etc. Thus creating a sort of grinding paste.

What you *will* gain is less splatter i.e. fling on rear wheel and swing arm.

The stickness reduces 'fling' a bit, but not very much. It still gets everywhere but stays on the interface between sprockets a tiny bit longer so does it's job.

'Dirt' in the uk is wet and sticky most of the time and so it would stick to the chain anyway.

I use an automatic oiler. The principal it one of 'Total Loss Lubrication' it is continuously drip fed oil from a small reservoir as the bike trundles along the roads at ludicrously ridiculously fast speeds. Cool

Are you a spammer?

Are you selling furniture or kitchens too?

Do you need any stats for a school project?

Someone had to ask.

I doubt if he is going to get his bonus growing leaps and bounds by getting us all to buy chainsaw oil for out bike chains so I think he gets the benefit of the doubt here. Laughing Thumbs Up

We can't be too carefull and vet all newcomers.
If we get too many members on the forum we won't all get in the transit to the BBQ. 🙁

Honestly I've tended to avoid forums as they normally end in grief with keyboard warriors, this is no different it seems, why would I be a spammer for taking part in the function of this site? I'm not selling anything or asking for anything other than advice or opinions? Anyway I'm not up for the crap that's already creeping in? Two days in and apparently I'm being vetted for obeying the rules and taking part , maybe he moderators need to pay more attention to some of the regular members behaviour. Anyway, thank you to those who have helped, it was appreciated.

You may think you're not selling anything, or that you're just asking for advice or opinions, but from your huge posting history it seems you are selling:

Armoured cars, Assorted motorcycle parts, Buttons, Chains, Chainsaw oil, Chainsaws, Chain wax, Fairings, Forums, Garden machinery, Holidays, Keyboards, Lights, Motorcycles, Ritchey nippers, Sewage, Sex, Spiced ham, Tanks, Timepieces.

But hey! Good luck with your chainbsaw lube experiment!

Report back, please?

I bought 5 litres 3 years ago. It goes through the scotoiler (other auto chain lubers are available) with no issues and the chain is oiled to the point that I had to strip the hub of the strumpet to adjust the tension because it happened so rarely.

I still have 2.5 litres of chain saw oil left. I used a whole can of ptfe spray on the hub. It turns easily a year later.

OP Takes a bit of a ribbing and gets all butthurt about it.

Imagine the meltdown is someone suggested the butthurt was from taking it in the butt. Which is why he wanted lube advice in the first place...
