Got yet another mystery issue with the gk76a. Bike turned over this morning on the button, as it has been doing. After idling for a moment the bike cut out, was running a little low on fuel so not too concerned I filled up the tank.

Now the bike is failing to start, with or without choke, tried with throttle on/off, double checked the kill switch and even tried bumping the bike to no avail.

I can only imagine it's incredibly unlikely for all sparks to go, it does sometimes give the faintest rumble as if 1 cylinder or more is trying.

I'm completely at a loss for where to start.

Edit: I would also say I'm confident the bike is getting fuel due to the strong smell whilst trying to start

From the top of my head!
Can only think of a safety switch trying to kill the sparks.

You would think so! The kill switch is good and likewise the side stand, truly mistified by this one. Coming from years of 2 strokes I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious, but knowing my luck it's more likely to be catastroptic.

The switches may be good but how about the wiring?

My bike cut out mid-run and it seemed to be the stand switch, i.e. bypassed it and bike ran fine. Turned out not to be the switch but actually the wiring had chaffed.

I'm not sure how likely it would be since he bike would start in neutral even with the side stand switch

Well it`s a big job to find out if the spark plugs are wet with fuel or dry!

If you can pop off an HT lead but the spark plugs are hard to access and remove, plug any old plug into the lead and check for a spark that way.

I would be checking for water in the fuel, seeing as it sounds like this bike is a bit unknown and it has run low. Water sits in the lowest part of the fuel tank, so it can sit there for years and only cause a problem when you switch the bike onto reserve.

Check the leftmost carb. This one sits lowest when the bike is on the side stand, so is most likely to have water in. Hold a cup underneath it, open the drain screw, and look at what came out. If you find water, drain the whole system down then refill with fresh fuel.

Any 4 cylinder Suzuki 400 of that era that doesn't start the first thing to suspect is the carbs. Especially since it won't start after running out of fuel.

Silly question but does the bike have a fuel tap, and have you set it to prime? If not it won't fill the float bowls after being run dry.

Yes, worth pointing out that water and petrol are different densities and separate out - water sits at the bottom of carb bowls, water sits at the bottom of fuel tanks... and you did run it dry.

Fuel pickup is also at the bottom of the tank, so what's in the bottom goes out first as soon as you go on reserve.
