I have just bought a Honda Shadow VT700 import. Previous owner tells me that its ok to ride bike without any liquid in the cooling system. is this true. cheers

Absolutely not. You could start it and run it for a very short time but we're talking seconds not minutes. A couple of minutes running would see the cylinder temps skyrocket and that's without riding it.

Why does the bike not have coolant in it?

Probably because if you fill up the cooling system, it will piss out of every available orifice.

Liquid cooled engines don't have air cooling as an option.

I have a similar bike - mine doesn't need tyres because the rims touch the road and allow it to move.
