Has someone got any experience with decent air filters? I don't care how it looks, I care how it works. Any pointers appreciated, I don't fancy just lobbing money at them until I find one that works. It's a 125 single, nominally 15HP. Carb is a PZ26 with accelerator pump, inlet size is 38mm. As there's no airbox, space shouldn't be an issue unless it's fucking massive.

This thing was the reason the bike bogged to all fuck over 4K revs. Removed with prejudice, and it runs properly now.

So I need something minimally restrictive, while stopping shite getting in the carb. Are the foam looking ones any good? Is a decent pod better? Can I get away with a plain old mesh? I don't know, hence asking.

inb4 "ditch it, use airbox" - it hasn't got one, I don't have one in my bag of spares, and I'm not paying for one.

All of them pretty much work the same. Not as good as paper air filters in a nice airbox, but better than nothing.

You might gonna need a bigger jet/s. Less restrictive pod filters let in more air.

Plain old mesh will work as well.

She's been upjetted. Just on the edge of popping on overrun.

She ran fine (for a 125) until this particular pod was fitted. Took me a while, as I too thought they were all the same, bar inlet diameter. Obviously not. Does exactly what I'd expect her to without a filter at all so I want to stay as close to that as I can without risking sucking FoD into the inlet port or carb slide.

The more mileage you're aiming to do the better the filter you'd want...

Want something cheap and effective? Two layers of chicken wire with chainsaw air filter foam sandwiched in between. Oil it up, job's a good'un.

Reuse the rubber base of the old filter for extra style points Smile

I still like the oiled cotton gauze K&N style filters best. All id say, and I know fuck all is:

1, Don't fit the clamp on filter directly onto the carb, if there's a carb to airbox hose, it needs to go on the end of that.

2, If the airbox has a velocity stack or belmouth inside then you want to keep it.

3, Always fit the biggest filter you can in the space you have.

Saying that I was told that the small conical filter with a 32mm spigot I fitted on a 100cc engine, was capable of flowing enough air for 40bhp.

Reckon I'll end up making something. Available options seem to be cheap shite with probable shit results, or a filter worth half as much as the bike itself. I'll make a stack out of rubber (work perks) and chuck some gauze/paper from a disassembled filter on it. Plenty of space as there's no airbox.

I forgot how easy the thing is to chuck around and the liberties you can take with it, given it's a 17 year old Korean 125 cruiser. It'll do for the 4 miles to work.

If you find a cheap used decent brand filter from a car or bigger bike that's too big on the spigot size, you could always machine yourself a split collar to fit the carb flange to make up the diameter?

I can do either the rubber or use the machine shop in work. As a temp measure, I'll gut the mesh off the old one and remove the paper part of the filter, and put the mesh over the carb inlet. It'll stop anything jamming the slide at least.

Wife or GF's tights, cut a piece out, fix with rubber band (you said you didnt care what it looked like). The gusset bit is double thickness.
