Am licence confusion

Hi all,

Hoping someone will be able to help me out here as I cannot find a clear answer.

My wife has a full driving licence (passed in 2008) and has completed a CBT. Am I right in believing that she now has a full moped licence? She has got herself a 50cc Scooter to get to work and is still displaying L Plates.

She was told when she was doing the CBT that she would have to keep the L plates and re do her CBT in 2 years but I don't believe this is the case.

So surely that means she just has to send her CBT certificate to the DVLA and she has a full moped licence?

Really hoping someone can clear this up for me?

Sorry forgot to add that she called the DVLA and they were completely useless! They told her that she didn't need to send them the CBT certificate. Surely she does to remove the 122 restriction code on her licence ?

As long as she has the pass certificate its fine for her to leave off the L plates.

I thought the same rules applied as for a 125cc. She can ride up to 125cc while she has a valid CBT certificate. So needs to renew every 2 years.

If she had passed before feb 2001 then I think it is category "P" then she would have been able to ride a moped without CBT.

Pre '01 license holders don't even need to do CBT for AM entitlement.

The moped license thing is really old, and went out before I got my car license in 1998, so no she doesn't have a moped license as far as I'm aware.

Yes, but that's true of all of the other routes through that flowchart even if they involve passing Mod1 and Mod2.

Having dug out my old CBT certificate the notes on the back say that it "validates, for the life of the licence, the full moped entitlement granted with a full car licence issued in respect of a practical car test passed on or after 1 February 2001 if, either: the car test is passed within 2 years of this certificate being issued, or the training course was completed after the car test was passed."

I thought I'd give up update on this just in case anyone else wants to know how this works. So my wife now has a full moped licence.

I'll keep this simple.

If you have a full driving licence and passed AFTER feb 2001 you can take a CBT and this will give you a full moped licence for the life of your driving licence. You DO NOT need to retake your CBT. You DO NOT need to display L plates and you CAN carry a pillion.

After you complete your CBT send it to the DVLA with your full driving licence and they will remove the 122 restriction code (122 Valid on successful completion of Basic Moped Training Course (CBT)) from the back of your licence.

Cannot believe the amount of confusion which surrounds this.

So yeah, the wife is happy! She has got herself a E-moped and loves it. Only does 30mph but she charges it at work so free mileage for her lol

Thanks for the update. I mentioned to the wife it would be easy to get a full moped licence so she could ride the scooter I salvaged...

...she was not impressed!
