OK I was always going to ask..... what the actual f**k?

So I've bought my first bike. So far so good. Bike arrived started it and had to turn it off (was at work, customer came in) bike sat for 2 weeks. Passed my test, got insured bike didnt start. Fuel, air, spark plugs checked. Turned out to be a split ht cable. Bike put back together after changing spark plugs and swapping out the fuel and battery. (Sounds mint actually not going to lie.) Second run out and my confidence is up so i opened her up and she maxed out at 70. Naturally my first bike so I thought she was OK just restricted but turns out acceleration isn't where it should be either. The general consensus is carbs need a clean..... or worse the piston rings are knackered (does smoke a bit whilst on choke firing up)

Thought I might post this here to see if any of you guys have an opinion? Before I strip the carbs and clean everything.

Noob! Try saying hello.
After that, try looking to see if it has a restrictor kit installed?

Seems unlikely to max out exactly at 70 hard, unless there's some sort of speed detector and limiter in place. Which there won't be.

More detail required, what gear are you in, what revs are showing on the tacho, how much throttle are you giving it?

I keep having visions that someone's made a stunt bike from the thing and lobbed a 90 tooth sprocket on the bike..

Are you definitely in top gear? Have you tried for more??
(the longer no answer comes, the sillier the replies will get..)

Does the bike misfire at all?

the zx6r relies heavily on the ram air system. Can run sweet as a nut at standstill but like a bag of nails over 60 if the ram air is disconnected.

33bhp or 46bhp restriction would cut the level of acceleration as well as top speed. Sounds like it might be restricted to 33bhp! Although it probably should be doing closer to 100mph...?

Probably an air leak at the air box/carbs/ram air/kleen thingy.

I'd take it apart again and check all the hoses etc for potential places for an air leak.

If it's an air leak bad enough to more than half the top speed, there's no way the bike would sound "mint" as described by the OP.

Besides, Ram air adds a tiny bit of power at high speeds, it's likely not having any significant affect at all at 70mph, even in fully functioning condition.

It's either restricted or fucked. Either way the carbs are coming off, so good luck with that.

Agreed, but G disconnected the ram air tubes on his ZX9R and it prevented it from running properly. So even if it DOES only add 2-3bhp at the top end, disconnecting it when it's designed to be there compromises the bike enough to cause something akin to what the OP described.

I can also confirm that this can be the cause. Disconnecting the ram air/having an air leak somewhere on a bike designed with ram air isn't the same as comparing 2 bikes that are set up with or without a ram air setup.
