I've been to China. The things that struck me most were:

Modern, high tech high rise buildings within metres of medieval slums.

The Government really doesn't want foreigners to venture off the official tourist path and see the way most of the population live.

Air pollution in Bejing.

How few westerners there are outside the big cities.

How good the food is. Haven't had a Chinese takeaway in this country since.

How feckin' steep the Great Wall is. Bloody dangerous!

People in military-style uniforms doing menial jobs like clearing rubbish.

Spitting.

How keen people are to learn English.

Obsession with tea.

I could go on....

Even though you just told me, I can't really possibly know any of that because I haven't been there myself.

That's like parents trying to tell me that because I don't have any kids of my own, I can't possibly be worldly enough to
accurately diagnose that theirs are little undisciplined little bastards.

In my day it was ADHD... none of this "on the spectrum" malarkey Smile

The problem is they aren't actually lying: their kids do have autism. But then, everyone literally does but it's the degree that's crucial.

How long ago was this?

I've been all over China, rough parts, rich parts, slums, the lot. Nobody has any business telling anyone they can or can't go anywhere. I even got bloody close to Tibet (the Tibetan autonomous prefecture which for all intents and purposes is Tibet) and spoke to locals (Tibetans) about their life under the Chinese government. Was quite enlightening.

Not once did I ever feel like I was going to a place the government didn't want me to see. For that kind of thing, it's just the usual - military bases etc.

Maybe things have changed a lot over the years. The thing about government minders only happens when TV crews or journalists go over. The several million foreigners living in China are as free as they would be in any other country, and can see whatever they like. I even have a mate who lived in a slummy area because he thought it was cool. It's quite a common thing.

Fair point. What I really mean is, judging by what most people say, they have absolutely no clue about the place, and would probably do very well by just visiting for themselves.

Democracy isn't a bad system. It's people that fuck it up.

Democracy would be a great thing to have back.

All I see these days is plutocracy.

Maybe, but Marxism is never the answer. It's about balance.
