Hey everyone I've a strange request for today..

I do several things in life and a hobby is making pretty metal things. Usually metal flowers but during a recent mooch through old photo folders I came across an old project I once did. Basically it was a metal butterfly but made with almost all recycled components. The metal was recycled stuff and the glass came from the rubble of a house demolition site.

Long story short this was over 12 years ago I think. I can't remember what I used to hold the glass into the steel frame.
I know it wasn't silicone sealant - the stuff basically degrades, comes away in places.
I think I used something like a fuel tank sealant.
Does anyone here work with such products and can help steer me to the correct stuff??

I'm about to run 4 or 5 of these out (plus other things such as fruit bowls) and need a suitable 'glue' to hold the glass.
I need slightly flexible because things expand and contract.
It needs to be room temperature curing.
It needs to be black.
It needs to set and not be sticky at all.
Silicone is an obvious one but to be honest I've never found a longish lasting one. I might have to use it if I can't find the right stuff.

Best close image I can find of it and in detail. There is no lead in it - simply glass held in a metal strip frame.

Cheers!

Sikaflex 221.

Best stuff ever I've used in the sealeant department.

I've never used the black though, only the white but it doesn't discolour in years on boats I have worked on.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SikaFlex-221-Sealant-Sika-Cartridge-Black/dp/B07LBTHNDS/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=Sikaflex+221+black&qid=1558862565&s=diy&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1

You can get it cheaper on ebay and there's no description here but linked just for convenience.

Something like Permabond UV670? https://www.glueonline.co.uk/acatalog/Two_Part_Epoxies.html Edit: oops sorry, forgot black, that one's transparent.

How come silicone falls to bits? I would have thought a decent neutral cure silicone would be good for the job, but perhaps "messy".

Just like that the forum delivers!
I actually think that was the stuff I used - wasn't too sure though.

The stuff I used was a bit messy too and why some bits look 'amateur'.
With silicones I've found they get those odd 'whiskers' come away and look bad. One pull at it and it's ruined!

I use Dow Corning 3145 RTV to glue reflecting telescope secondary mirrors in place, it doesn't have acetic acid and is low outgassing. It's perfect for any glass. Thumbs Up

Tiger Seal could be another option

https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-body-repair/fillers-preparation/tigerseal-black-310ml-w-gloves

Used it in the past for stick spoilers to cars, it's listed beside Sikaflex on some car sights when I googled it to remind me of the name (I could remember tiger but not seal)
