Noob scooterist oil leak question

Hi All,

First post, be gentle.

I've just taken my first steps on the motorcycle ladder, did my CBT last weekend and picked up a cheap Yamaha Vity 125 for tootling to work and back. I've been commuting by bicycle for the last few years 200 miles per week and I'm happy messing with spanners so I'm planning on doing most of the maintenance myself.

I've noticed a small oil patch on the drive under the left side of scoot, it looks like it might be coming from one of the air box check hoses, so I loosened it off and oil came pissing out so I wedged it back on quickly incase what I'd got wasn't what I thought.

There's 2 pipes coming out of the back of the transmission side, are they both for the air box (that's what the manual says)? If so, why is there loads of oil in one? Should I just drain it out and then clean up the airbox?

It's running fine, starts straight away and goes as fast as I would expect.

Any ideas?

Yeah that's what I've got, but it's pretty vague. I just wanted to double check.

Looking on YouTube it looks like it's just oil that's been accumulating in there for a while, I just didn't want to knacker my bike in the first week. I'll drain it off tomorrow and clean the airbox out. Next week I'll change the oils, the bike has been sat for a year or so before I got it.

Check the oil level too, it could be overfilled, which will dump more into the airbox.

If it's the crank case breather then you should get some oil out but not pissing out... overfill sounds more like it.

Have you checked the air filter. If it gets clogged up too much the bike performance will start to degrade over time so put that on the list along with the oil change.

(BTW, "bike" oil is for bikes with wet clutches, if you don't have a wet clutch then any old shit will do!)

Could also be that the bike was laid on its side for a bit and the oil ran into the pipe that way.

I cleaned out the airbox this morning and it was grim, there was probably 50-100ml of oil in there, it's made a right mess of my patio.

I'm not sure it's ever been cleaned before so I'm going to put a fresh filter in when I change the oil too.

The plan is to run this for a couple of years, get my full license and then get a nice little maxi scooter. Or a real bike if I can get permission Laughing
