Just had an inguinal her hernia op. How long will i be off the bike for?

The risk of complication is there so seek 'professional' advice from your physician.
Two or three months at a guess providing there's been no stress on the tissues involved during the healing phase.

Doctors are fucking unhelpful when it comes to motorbikes.

They'll give you a facetious answer like "Never would be soon enough for me." (that is a direct quite from the orthopaedic registrar who wa schecking my wrist x-rays after I got the cast off).

Ask about something else that is percieved as healthy that has a similar level of bounce/movement. Moutain biking or kayaking or something.

I was told 6 weeks.
It's a proper operation so give your body time to heal but don't lozz about.


I'm relatively fit and the op I had was the belt n braces jobbie. Layer of gauze done under general.

I did get on the bike after a month but soon realised I was getting twinges of pain. It's a sports tourer so the position wasn't as relaxed as say a commuter bike.

Tried again after bit. I think about 10 days. All good.

That was a decade ago,. When I occasionally do a full days ride I still feel a twinge of discomfort.


What I find strange is to this day I don't know what caused the hernia in the first place.

I was signed off work for 4 weeks but after 2 weeks I locked myself out of the house and climbed up a drainpipe onto the porch roof and in through a first floor bedroom window. I seem to recall it pulled a bit at the time but no lasting effects.

Crystals, they can prove rather comforting if you choose the correct harmonic for your psyche.

2 days after my ingeunal hernia op I was running around the ward and being told off for jumping up and down

I was five though.

I had hernia surgery a year ago, I was able to ride back to work after 2 weeks without any issue. As long as you don't do any moves that are intense on your core muscles you should be fine

I've decided to just keep off the bike for at least a few weeks then I've got a loan of a car.
