Anyone have fake grass down?

The missus want to have it laid in the front garden I'd rather have real, I think artificial grass will look shit and look even worse after a year of weather on it, and we'll have wasted our money

her argument being is that it will make my life easier as obviously I wont need to cut it etc.

so do you have artificial grass, how long have you had it down? has it lasted? would you do it again?

Don't know, it's something I'd like to do. I think it all depends on the quality, as with most things. There's a garden along the way from here that looks really good with it - natural looking. Don't know how long they've had it there for though.

No but I've worked in landscaping and have always refused to do it!

Firstly, quality of product. There's so many 'varieties' out there now and even blends of fibre to give a particular look.
There's a problem though and that's weather resistance. Just around the corner here someone had an artificial lawn laid and they must have cheaped out on quality - it's not UV stable! Yup the lawn looks like those cheapo plastic toys that go pale if left in the sunshine. It's very noticeable too.

I can see the attraction of it all but remember too that it will get messy. Probably more so because it doesn't behave like normal grass. Imagine a few leaves or pine needles falling onto grass - they gradually rot and form soil around the blades which enhances the grass and so on. With artificial stuff they'll decompose (if you're lucky) and make soil on top of the matting that holds the turf together. Instead of using a lawn mower, you'll find yourself sweeping the artificial lawn on a regular basis. Same goes with anything dropped onto it.

If you do go the turf or artificial way, FFS don't do what so many do - even landscaping companies. Rotovate the ground before laying the stuff. Think about it: It aerates the soil, makes it squishy and will not go flat. Using a roller on aerated ground will not fully flatten it either - soil takes time to flatten using weather to do it naturally.

Oh and I've seen a lot of artificial turf coming away in places. It does wear out or get damaged. You know those killer carpets on stairs? Yeah same with placca turf.

If you want a final reason: You're killing the planet and using useful resources to make a bonny placca lawn. Real grass breathes and keeps us all alive.

Why not go for gravel or paving with the odd shrub or alpine type plants round the edge, timeless, will look better after five years - not ready to throw in the bin

Had a 4x3 mtr section in the rear garden. Bonus of this size is no joins. Life is so much easier. Picking up dogs shit is easy, no bare patches where they piss.
Still looking good after 9 months of hard use, by both dogs and us walking over it in all weathers.

Think I have brushed it once, and that was only due to me cutting wood on it...

Unlilke the old lawn that was a real mess.

It had a hard core laid down and then some sand, both fully tamped down.

Cost was about £1200 for it to be done and took less than a day.

Did think of doing the font ( I hate gardening) but the cost is just too much at the moment and it needs other work 1st.

I thought only people in the very dry areas used fake grass.

I put it down in an area I made for the kids to play in, 5 years later and it looks a bit flat as the boys play football on it but its still there unlike the turf I had before plus no muddy feet.

When all the boys move out in 18+ years, if I'm still in this house I'll take it up and put real grass back.

House we bought already had it in the back garden. S'alright to be fair. Just use a power washer to clean it down, does the job a good'un.

Some tufts of real grass appear to have broken through in patches but I couldn't really give a fuck about it to be honest, not trying to win gardeners world.
