Ahh, it's when you said direct train.

Like at Town, Grand Central is always advertising, but they don't go from Huddersfield.

Hence Mirfield/Brighouse guess.

A true Northerner knows that everywhere is south of Yorkshire even the North Pole.

Which is where? Does anybody know or care where Surrey actually is?

I wouldn't worry. For you it must be like a combination of Shangri La and El Dorado. It's mystical place full of horse stables and rowing clubs.

All the more peaceful because the local council have taken out an injunction on the whole of the "traveller community" so none of them are allowed to stop in the area. Next on the list is the clearing the slum boats from the Thames.

It's the sort of place Hitler would have happily retired to if he'd managed to conquer Europe.

Stacks of immigrants in Surrey! Due to the lack of black faces it's an attractive area for East Europeans.

God yes.

I worked with a lot of Croatians and they do not like Muslims or Blacks turning up in their gaff.

Much of the MoD was moved outside of London under previous governments because to address the problem of too many government jobs being in London. It's been reasonably successful in the case of the MoD but there are still way too many in London. It's also about the kind of jobs too. They will move a call centre to Hull, but not the £50k-£100k central London jobs which means the influence remains in London. The fundamental issue is that the civil service doesn't want to move, and they make the decisions in reality, so all we get are token measures.

Also Oxford and Cambridge should count as "London" for similar reasons.

Unemployment rates seem to have a slight weighting towards northern areas.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/297167/unemployment-rate-in-great-britain-by-region/

Kind of makes sense. It's the same in all countries. Get nearer major cities, and you get more money, jobs etc. UK has only one major city - London.

It would be good to move parliament up north though. Some countries already do it this way. Asutralia -> Canberra. Brazil -> Brasilia. The reason for this, I believe, is specifically to make sure the capital does not become a combined political/economic bubble.

And the reason for not doing it?

Because politics for a lot of people is about fanfare and show, so of course they should do their job in The Big City.

Shell talked about moving their head office out of London but in the end it was pure prestige that kept them there.

Important customers expect to roll up to an impressive building in the heart of London, not a prefab in Milton Keynes. Laughing

Or maybe London is nearer than Manchester or Birmingham, to the major transport connections and the majority of the population?

I'm sure the MP for Shetland really enjoys using those wonderful transport connections to bypass the perfectly accessible cities of Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham on their way to London to sit in a room for a day.

And what has the UK population got to do with this?

For business it makes sense to stay in a place like that. Politics is a different matter, I think.

On a related note, Channel 4 are shifting their offices from London to Leeds. About 90% of the London workforce decided to take redundancy instead of moving with the job. Not sure if that says something about Leeds, or London, or C4, or the people working for C4. It's being used as a beating stick in this whole north-south narrative anyway.

mpd why are you still talking about population density?

Constituencies are evenly spread across the country, with barely any extra weight toward London when compared with the other main British cities.

Look at this map and try telling me Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Liverpool do not hold any weight against London when it comes to number of MPs.
