Didn't know they existed but do remember prototypes being shown years ago.

I'm scared of balloons popping and so riding with a potential bang surrounding me is kinda scary.
Notice how the dude wearing it tries to keep his mean but confident face when wearing it? Yeah for a short while he pooped his pants.

They give these out to try at a local airfield riding day that I often attend. I'm not really sure of their utility on the road if I'm honest...

Didnt realise they were re-useable, I thought they were a one-shot thing. Thats neat.

The motorbike fast response guys at work (ambulance service) get issued these (as well as their choice of Arai or Shoei lids and Dainese leathers, I need to get in on this) , they get knocked off fairly frequently by idiot drivers and none of them have been quadraspazzed so they must be doing something right.

The principle of it seems pretty sound, plus its nice and snug around the base of your helmet too to lock that in place and protect the c-spine from wobbling around. To me it looks more about protecting internal organs than anything else, which is great because that tends to be what kills riders. People can survive broken bones, it tends to be internal bleeding from massive deceleration fucking up all your organs/blood vesels that kills you. Broken ribs hurt but a torn aorta will kill you in seconds. So adding an airbag to cushion the blow and slow down that deceleration can only be a good thing.

Come on a blue light drive and see what its like sometime. Generally the fuckwits on the road cant see a giant Merc Sprinter box van painted hi-viz yellow with big flashing lights and screaming siren coming their way... a tiny Pan Euro/R1200RT has no hope. Rolling Eyes

25+ years of either being a mechanic or a motorcycle courier/controller has taught me a few things, one of which is thinking that your blue lights make you invincible is very wrong and the Police suffer red mist on blue lights as much as any other driver. Be responsible for your own safety, don't rely on Blue lights. Thumbs Up

So, I went on another ARD recently. The airbag guy has a new piece of flim flam for his sales schtick. This time he activates the airbag on a semi willing volunteer, and then hits him three times at full pelt with a baseball bat.

I can't honestly see that I'm likely to be hit in the back with a baseball bat once I've come off of my bike... but still. In my experience, most of the injuries I've suffered when coming off of the bike have been flail injuries to my hands and feet. The only real advantage I can see is that it immobilises your neck, but seeing as it only goes off if you leave the bike, I can't see how it would help in 'hit up the back' whiplash type injuries.

Lamppost could kill you at 30mph. IIRC hard deceleration (e.g. brick wall) at 35mph will tear your aorta, it's 50/50 at 30mph. I think there could be some value.

OTOH life is short and we're all going to die, do you want to armour up every time you ride? It's going to mean not riding as often, in all probability. Is that a better life?

The best tech will be the tech that has minimal prep time.

How common is hitting a brick wall in a bike accident, really? Lamp post... rare but maybe. Still not convinced.

I'm from a mountain area with narrow roads where one side is a rock wall and the other a long tumble before you either hit a landing, a tree, or the river 100m down.
The worse bits with the highest slopes have those metal rails installed, recently they put tires in the supports/posts because it seems to chop up riders Laughing

<Holds up hand>

Yeah I've got one similar, as it happens. I always wear it; it's no hassle at all and I just think, well why not?

In fact, I have unfortunately had occasion to test it out for real. I stacked my bike in France fairly spectacularly last year (see 2018 spill thread); the airbag vest deployed and according to the following riders and paramedics quite likely saved me from a busted neck as the brunt of the impact was entirely on my head/shoulder and my neck was immobilised (I was unconscious and have no memory of the impact).

The vest just needed a new £20 gas cylinder, but as the outer cover was pretty scuffed up - although still perfectly functional - I decided to have that replaced.

I know the nay-sayers will just say it's better to ride better and more safely than waste money on stuff like this, and I do take the blame 100% for the off. However, shit still happens to all of us, and I sure as hell wasn't riding any differently (ie more recklessly) for wearing the thing. I just thank God I was wearing it, and still always do.

It's like putting on a hi-viz vest; then you clip the 'ripcord' to the bike. Literally quicker than putting a helmet on.

I think it's far more about immobilizing the neck and spine. But why 'brick wall'? Why not 'road'? That's apparently all I hit.

Do they do one that protects your tackle? As my name suggests, yes I did lose one in a motorbike accident a few years ago.

Shocked

How did that happen? I assume you went forward over the bars and it snagged... What sort of bike?

It was a few years ago on a ZX6R. I was being silly, broke to hard and the front went from under me, I must of hit them on the tank.

I eventually went to the Hospital as the pain got worse in my groin as the day went on. They looked at me and said just bad bruising of the groin and hips and discharged me. As I walked back out to the car they came after me saying you shouldn't be walking like that (I was walking like John Wayne). They did a scan and said no blood was going to my left testicle and would have to operate. When I came round, they informed me that it was a mush and had to be removed.

So now I have one that hangs in the middle
