Hi all,

I did 2 years of motorcycling on an A2 license. During this time i built up 2 years of no claims discount. Immediately after the 2 years A2, i did the full unrestricted A license which i have now held for 1 year. I’ve had my renewal quote back from the insurance company and they’ve included 3 years no claims bonus, despite telling me last year that i needed to start the year on 0 ncd (which i did) since the A license was a different license? Is this right, are you allowed to count those A2 years, which they have done for some reason?

I don’t know whether to say anything as my renewal has gone down from about £790 last year to £450 this year, a reduction of 43%. This is on a GSXR-750, for info!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I think those years should be able to be carried over but don’t want to wrongfully claim them in case of an accident!

Thanks!

Insurance companies can and do make up their own rules. But I've never come across that one before.

I carried over 2 years of no claims on a 125 (on L plates) to my 600 when I passed my test, they were fine with that.

It's years continuously insured as a rider so you can carry it on. I've got 5 years from CBT > A2 > A.

No claims discount is just that; it has nothing to do with your licence type, just the vehicle type (e.g. cars and motorcycles are separate). I don't see why you couldn't build up NCD on a 50cc scooter with just CBT either to be honest.

The only exception to the rule is if you're a named driver/rider on a policy; you can only accrue NCD on your own policy.
