Sounds like one aimed at folk from the USA?

Edit no - forget that. I'm too tired to read it all.
I dunno but they only do it because people actually fall for it.

I was thinking it would be simple but it seems that they're targeting:

Immigrants with a land line and have recently applied for a national insurance card and are thick as shit! Immigrant + NI sorta implies EU citizen over the usual "Calais Taxi" entrants...

That's quite a teeny-weeny intersection on the Venn diagram of scam victims!

My mate got one from 'BT' a couple of days ago, saying his phone line was being shut down in 24 hours because "illegal hacking detected, please press 1 to connect to an advisor". He pressed 1 (twat), the line went dead.

Yeah I had that one yesterday too.
It's quite a smart system when you think about it; they don't need any human involvement but just set their robots autodialling, to harvest not only simply active numbers but also the crucial subset of those numbers where the number is owned by a Very Gullible Person who will potentially make good pickings for the follow-up call made by a human...

I kept having BT phoning me up. I just put the phone down thinking it was just pestering sale calls. It turned out they were genuinely offering me a better offer. Shocked. Just goes to show.

Quite an old system, too. In the "computing" field, it's been around for at least 30 years.

I had the same. I asked 'Are you really BT' which in hindsight wasn't the cleverest question in the avoiding scams handbook Laughing

Funnily enough I made one of those phones out of 2 tins and a bit of string when my grandson and granddaughter were staying.

They weren't impressed. I suppose when you have been brought up with mobile phones it's not quite the viable communications device we regarded it was when we were kids. Laughing

People phoning my mobile now...

"Hi, are you the owner of [some domain name] we'd like to offer finance for your business."

To which I replied: no thanks, I don't need finance from random telemarketers. If I were you I'd look for a better job as scrapping the domain name registries for contact info is pretty lame!

How long before your first scam call on it?

The thing is, it's no lose for the scammers because they never seem to get caught.
It's like this huge Universal Credit scam which has been going on. Everyones whining about which poor fcuker is going to pay for it, whilst the scammers are laughing all the way to Halifax.
