From tomorrow, new electric cars must be fitted with noise devices so the blind can hear them, fair shout.

https://home.bt.com/news/uk-news/new-electric-cars-must-be-fitted-with-noise-devices-to-protect-pedestrians-11364373211812

Can I make a suggestion - In case there are blind and deaf people around, we should fit electric cars with diesel or petrol engines so the deaf and blind people can smell them. Also then we wouldn't need to fit noise makers as the blind people could hear the engines.

If we do that, we might as well save money and be eco friendly not fitting batteries and electric motors.

Therefore we should make diesel and petrol cars Thumbs Up

You know it makes sense.

I think they should have a mechanical siren like a stukka bomber. Then you will have an idea of how fast they are going too.

I'm sure the Reichstag European Comission will approve of this.

Oh.

Dear God.

You *know* what will happen.

People will fit very loud noise making devices "so they'll go faster".

UGH!

So what about other electric means of transport.... And cyclists....

We are told that the loss of one sense means others are enhanced.

Its not exactly like electric cars are silent anyway.

Another EU waste of common sense. Shocked

Can't make my mind up if I'd want a TIE fighter sound, or the Jetsonmobile.

Jetsons up to 70 MPH, Stuka when over 70 MPH and tie fighter when spinning out of control.

Let’s face it, you cause far less harm to the planet driving an old V8 than scrapping it to buy a new car which didn’t need making, with all the pollution involved in manufacturing it, powering it and recycling it and it’s nasty batteries.

I can see a time when I end up driving something electric, just because I need to drive every day, but I will keep my Corvette until the day I die, even if I have to brew my own fuel for it Twisted Evil

Back in the day (before even I was born) there was a siren you could fit to bicycles. Not just any siren but a real mechanical one. It resembled those 'pear-shaped' dynamos which touch a small wheel to the side of the tyre. The metal body had slots inside and inside that was the shutter wheel.
I've no idea why they stopped making them. Great for safety and kids would pedal faster = healthier.
They need to make a come back for ALL bicycles.

I think its a good regulation.

However, it's an EU regulation, and so on that basis I am opposed to it.

Being hit by a car is more likely to be fatal. People have been killed by bikes but its quite rare in comparison. I'd guess the car is more likely to toss you in the air leading to brain damage than a bike, plus theres a hardened glass window to smash your head into first.

Electric cars are nearly silent at 20mph which is where the issue seems to be. At 20 you are far more likely to survive, but that doesn't mean it won't be via an intensive care unit.

Not that I agree with regulation for the sake of it, but the rules are relatively sensible on this occasion...

Noise to be made when moving below 12mph, or reversing. That's pretty much solely pedestrian areas then.

Above 12mph I'd expect tyre noise makes them audible anyway.

But, how long until people become complacent to the sound - like burglar alarms and no-one giving a toss (unless you're trying to sleep).

It'll be interesting to see what sounds they come up with.

I think people should be allowed to choose their own sounds, like ring-tones if you like. For maximum highway safety I'd go for something dramatic, like:

or

or even

Burglar alarms get ignored because they're famously prone to false alarms. I wonder what percentage of burglar alarms going off are actually caused by a genuine burglar? 5%? Less probably!

Last time I heard a reversing truck beeper, I'm fairly sure there was actually a truck reversing.
