Got a bit of a problem with big house flies, not exactly a plague but a fair few, anyone know what sort of fly this is, the knot in the timber is 2cm across.

Looks like a Flesh Fly ... they can get up to about an inch long.

Interesting fact - they can give birth to live maggots rather than laying eggs.

The fly killer pens work well, you paint them around the windows. Also fly papers but don't walk into them.

Edit: Addendum: it's a dead red-tailed flesh fly.

As with any infestation they'll be there for a reason. Basically food and shelter.
What type of area do you live in? Nearby landfill site? Slaughterhouse? Farm? Broken sewer? Dead body under your patio?
The fact it's a flesh fly tells you dead animals or feces. Obviously the flies are a problem but you'll need to sort whatever is feeding them or the flies will always be there.

I've heard of flesh flies but never seen one. They do remind me of horse flies though and those can be a nightmare up here due to damp land.

To kill insects at home I use one of those electric tennis racket things that cost less than a fiver. I think Aldi have some on sale currently.

Look for dead critter somewhere inaccessible. Could be large bird in chimney like a pigeon, squirrel in loft,
mouse under kitchen cupboards or something like that. I know at least a couple of smaller birds have met their
maker inside my cavity walls since I've lived here. Before I found and sealed up where they were getting in.

Erm, strictly speaking at the time I took the photo it was undead,
I'd zapped it with one of those electric tennis racket thingies until it lit up like a light bulb, but the bastard still sprung back to live a few seconds later. Second dose of leccy sent him to the promised land.

Holy fuck, those are some proper mean little shits.
They do all the shit eating things you dread them doing, and then somehow while you are "immobile" they snot in your arse and jizz a load of maggots into ya.

Sounds like someone you'd want your daughter to bring home. Not.

What you need in your house is a spider or two. I never kill spiders in my house and I do believe that leads to reduce presence of any flying insects.

I only tolerate spiders because I hate maggots worse.

I couldn't live with that, I'd be investing in some industrial UV zappers.
I do all I can to avoid fly bites since a particularly nasty incident occurred years ago when my leg swelled up to the point where I needed antibiotics and had to take a week off work.
Now I never wear shorts and pick up the dog shit in the garden straight away.
