No it wont. Alcohol offers an immediate tangible "hit". Tobacco on the othet hand does not its use is only propergated for cultural reasons, IE hey I'll look cool smoking (in the west), I'll get boxed out of my brain in a sweat lodge while overdosing on nicotine and meet my ancestors in a dream walk (in native american tribal ritual bulls#it). True people might stary growing their own marajeewahnahhh more but that's not going to be in response to tobacco controls.

More likely is nicotine usage will move to inhaler / vaping forms. I dont know if big tobacco companies have moved into this atea yet as its fifteen years since I smoked so im not up on brands and vaping.

Oh they won't actually ban it, they'll just up and up the tax on it. Win win, people stop or the government makes more on it.

I don't know how valid it is now, but a few years back someone worked out if the NHS got the tax money off cigarettes it would be more than they spend on smoking related illness.

When I was at sea, the last price for duty free before they banned smoking on the ships I worked on was £5.60 for 200. It must be close on £80 in the UK for 200? That's a lot of tax revenue to lose.

They've broken the £11 a box barrier now. My guy used to get them for me regularly 200 Bensons for £25 "duty free"
when I was in my 20's but I stopped on tailor mades when they hit £5 a box. Switched to rollies for the next 15 odd years.
I completely stopped smoking tobacco about 6 years ago now. I used to smoke about 30 a day equal to over 200 a week.
At todays money that's equates to over £110 a WEEK just to smoke. There's as good a reason as any to knock it on the
head, that sure is a lot of dough.

I've always thought that eventually some wrstern country would find a way of virtually eluminating tobacco smoking. As for the loss of tax revenues you have to set that against the savings in health consequences. Economies can recover from loses anyway so over the next few decades the loss in tax revenues will be minimal.

An interesting article on tobacco taxes. https://fullfact.org/economy/does-smoking-cost-much-it-makes-treasury/
I
t made wonder if a risk tax would work. So if a particular activity raises the chance of creating cost to the country then tax it more? So us bikers would be screwed given our risk of using health services is higher. I dont think its a good idea but such fattaxes are often suggested one way or another. Personally im against it as a state can end up being dependent on the revenues of something lije smoking when it's a mass activity if little real worth.

Healthier and happier ppl are more productive so if ppl start giving up not only do you save NHS bills you'll eventually gather more taxes from earnings. Very long term view though.

Then cost a fortune in old age to care for. Dementia is rapidlg becoming the number one cause of death in the UK as smoking related diseases are less common and cancer treatments improve.

Yes, people always forget that National Insurance was set up as insurance against old age not a benefit to be hoovered up for the next 20+ years!

If we didn't have the NHS smoking wouldn't be so widely persecuted.

Government like the tax. They like people dying earlier.

Therefore most countries with no NHS system won't vilify smoking like we do so there will always be a source for smuggled fags. It will overtake drugs just when people are saying we ought to legalise drugs as a way to stop smuggling.

Do they ever learn?

Makes me furious when they lump pensions in with benefits as if they are doing us a favour.

If I could have put my NI contributions in a private pension fund id be on a yacht on Cannes now, not a narrowboat in Milton Keynes. Rolling Eyes

Gave up drinking and now smoke slightly more than I used to.
You give up one vice and it gives somewhere else. Addictions are commonly drink, drugs, but they're present in other areas.

I've seen drinkers quit and get addicted to gambling, latest fashion, eating, even the gym.

Exchanging liver cirrhosis for lung cancer is of course not a good choice. BUT it's been reported that obesity is now worse than smoking.
Where will it end? Personally I think i'm addicted to Oxygen Sad Better cut down there, save some for the rest. Damn Oxygen thief.
Think about it. Everyone who has died once breathed Oxygen. Dangerous stuff.

Nicotine on its own is a stimulant and merely habit forming.

Cigarettes, on the other hand, also contain other alkaloids and are about as addictive as heroin.

Then when you pitch back here to have your liver disease treated on the NHS you can fuck off back to the med.

Might not have made much difference, friend of mine is executing her recently dead husband's affairs and his 80K private pension pot (TBF, he would still have 20 years contributions to go, had he lived) is going to be worth a whole £1800 pa - doesn't seem like a great rate of return.

BTW, I might be moving up your way soon, can I come and dangle my rod in the GUC from your boat, while puffing on a huge lardy?

I'll bring the red wine/scotch (delete as applicable)
