The coffee "crisis"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-48631129

How the fuck is coffee a commodity? I browsed through Bloomberg's commodity price listings I can see how almost everything but coffee could have a serious use or be essential to life but coffee?!

The whole article is crying and whining about how bad it is for the farmers but never ever even considers coffee to be a non-essential luxury item Sad

I only drink tea BTW Wink

It's as retarded as that alleged "world shortage" of prosecco. What utter BS, air head wags were still able to knock it back by the bottle on a night out befoer heading home in a taxi crying becuase they've their purse stolen (lost becuase they're so pissed).

I'll worry when there's a Red Bull shortage!

Now that really would be a crisis. Shocked

I think you're supposed to read past the headline, which is intentionally named to hook readers.

Quite a refreshing article actually. No political or social slant to it. Just a story about how the coffee industry is doing at the moment.

Orange juice, fair enough, it's up there with water and milk but coffee? Let us not forget that the bean's popularity is down to terrorists not having access to explosives and resorting to dumping tea shipments in the sea in lieu of protest Wink

Pah! Don't bother me with technical details!

I would be curious to see the historic prices of errr.... cash crops versus conventional commodities.

$5 (£4) for a cup of coffee? I know that the people working behind the counter are highly educated philosophers and all that, and that I live in a poverty land, but £4?! Shocked

£4 for a cup of coffee is common at many facilities.

Of which £0.0000000000001 goes to tax.

Going off on a slight tanget... Coffee shops/cafés in general piss me off, I'm more of a tea man (I do like the occasional cup of coffee - but tea 95% of the time) - but I find it hard to swallow the prices they want, especially when it's so easily & cheaply made at home [and put into a flask/bodum/Contigo]

Plus, as mainly a tea drinker - when you order a coffee in a coffee shop/café - they grind the beans, push the water through, froth the coffee, dick about with drawing things in the foam and fellate you under the counter. When you order a tea, they throw a waterproof teabag in a cup and pour hot water on it, that's your lot. Essentially a drink in kit form. And they still want £2 or £3 for that.
Greasy spoons are the best, they generally make a half-decent cup of tea (as in brewed & milked, ready to go) and they charge you up to a quid.

They're probably everywhere but here in the North East there's a new Costa drive through. Are people so lazy that they drive through for a damned coffee? As you say, why didn't they make a flask up? Especially since they're obviously driving somewhere. Probably driving home with a Costa coffee to drink at their kitchen table..

Speaking of drive throughs - Greggs have just opened a drive through unit here. Such a lazy idea that.

Starbucks/Costa/Cafe Nero? would rather drink my own urine that their excuse for tea Evil or Very Mad

OTOH I had one of the best cups of tea from Notes but then they went to the trouble of using decent, loose leaves in an infuser.

People moaning because I've got Asdas finest (cheapest) instant coffee on my boat.

'How can you drink that?'

'I don't, I drink tea. It's for people like you who drink coffee. Philistines. Cool

edited to add - Does coffee have a use by date, cause it's at least 2 years old. Laughing

Best check it yes. I had an unopened jar that was way out of date and the contents had shrunk and looked like a blue chocolate thick disc.

I like coffee. I buy Nescafe Azera, its the only instant that tastes any good I won't drink generic instant I'd rather go with out or have tea. Before Azera I would brew my own with an aeropress, it's nicer than the azera but 10x the faff.

Coffee is only expensive if you get tarty ones. I'm pretty sure a black coffee is ~£2 in most chains, probably not much dearer than the tea.

I like a decent filtered coffee on occasion. My favourite occasion is when I am on holiday, sat at a café overlooking a harbour, 11.00am, with an ice-cold beer to follow. Sets me up for the trials of the day...

'Readymix' black coffee is saved for long car journeys, hangovers and when customers only have that nasty milk that doesn't go off as fast.

I don't drink the stuff either but keep it in for visitors.

I've had a jar disintegrate into a treacle-type sludge in the bottom. Apparently still tasted ok once mixed up with boiling water. Less-so after it went green hairy mouldy. I don't know what they're complaining about, after all they drink coffee that's been picked out of cat-shit.

I now keep the instant coffee jar in the deep freeze between visitors because it's expensive shit to be going green and mouldy.

How cum no fucker cares about bananas? Eh?

The Bananas we all enjoy today is a genetic strain introduced when the bananas we all enjoyed years ago were wiped out across the world by a plague the commercial banana had no resistance to.

People easily forget the exact same thing happened to coffee too.

We farm these 'commodities' on an industrial level which demands that the plants conform to international standards.

The single strain grown is eventually beaten by nature.

Think of how today's banana tastes when the next commercial bananas hit the world market.

Blackened-Skin Banana splodged over a toasted ootsider and Lurpak.
