So I've had my 125 since September last year and it's the first bike i've insured. About a month ago i passed my mod 2 and now have a full licence and am itching to upgrade to something bigger and better, but i'm still new with all this insurance stuff. If i get another bike before i complete a full year without claiming will that mean my insurance on the new bike will be higher than necessary for the whole year, or will it drop down after a few months when my NCB kicks in? Or should i stick with the 125 til September and then buy a new bike with a NCB on record so the insurance gets knocked down?

I know it's a bone question, but i'm tight and paying out unnecessary money triggers me. Laughing

You're gonna miss that 125... Seems hard to believe right now, I know.

You only live once so sell your 125 and get what you really want. There has been terrific riding weather these past couple of weeks. A full year's NCB on your next (bigger) bike is a good idea, but how much is it worth? Check it out on the usual price comparison websites. I think the type of bike you intend to buy as your next bike will have a lot more bearing on insurance costs. A conservative choice like an ER6 will probably cost you less in insurance than what you're paying on your 125 now. Try out different bikes on the comparison websites and see what's what.

The only advice I will offer is, never buy a bike if there isn't something about it you like, subjectively. There's no point buying a bike with just your brain and logic, unless you're a courier or you need a second bike just for commuting.

Why not just run some insurance quotes on a comparison site and see what the price is with and without the NCB? Sometimes NCB doesnt have much affect on the price and license length is what matters.
Theres could also be the option to switch your current insurance over to a bew bike and keep what you have earned so far, but then you cant really get the best deal possible.

If you cancel the policy then the ~10 months you've had insurance on your 125 don't count towards your NCB. When the policy has run for the full 12 months then you'll have 1 years NCB, if you cancel it before then (even just a day early!), you don't get any NCB from it.

As others have said, get some quotes online to see if the lack of NCB is even an issue and you can also find out how much your current insurance company would want to swap your policy to whatever bike it is you're going to get.

See what the prices are like and we're all tight when it comes to giving money to insurance companies but we're also impatient when it comes to wanting a bigger and better bike. Laughing

What bike are you thinking of getting?

Ok, so i ran some checks on the comparison sites and i've realised it's a pretty redundant question. I'm looking at getting a Suzuki SV650 and after entering the details on a 2015 model for £3,500 even with a 1 year NCB i get 1 quote for £919 and everything else is £4k+. So i guess i'll be holding onto my little 125 for a little longer yet.
