sun glare

I notice when riding at times when the sun is low in the sky, it can get directly in the eyes and affect my visibility badly at times. Is this considered a serious hazard (and are sunshades necessary for bright days)?

Strip of insulating tape on visor along the top. Or yeah wear some kind of tinted visor or shades if your lid will allow.

My helmet has a drop down sun visor but it's still not enough when the sun is low. I'm going to get a motoGP/F1 style visor strip when I find one I like the look of.

On my bicycle I wear an old style cotton cap under my helmet which is great, I didn't realise I'd miss it so much when I gave up pedalling to work.

I'm a little surprised that this hazard wasn't discussed much (as far as I remember anyway) when I did my CBT years ago. I imagine it's quite a problem when commuting as you're likely to be out there when the sun's going down.

I think you young whippersnappers who don't think it's a serious problem may think differently when you get a bit older - your eyes don't adapt anything like as quickly and as well. As a "born-again" biker , I can say that the first time this happened to me on a country ride out soon after I started riding again it was nothing short of terrifying - I rounded a corner, literally couldn't see a damned thing and had to do an emergency stop. I manage the problem now with the insulating tape trick (I have two visors in fact, one taped, one not, which works well).
