Jealous!
I've seen a few interesting insects over the last few summers, hurrah for global warming, or something.
Anyway, most notably I've seen a few Stag Beetles this year, I've not seen one around these parts in maybe a decade or something.

Grr! Jealous too. I have never seen a live stag beetle. Where? How do you find them?
When I have seen HHMs, they've been flitting (rapidly!) about on a warm evening with little wind, each time attracted by buddleia. Just waiut & watch for a small thing whizzing about at high speed and abruptly stopping at flowers.
I like bugs, too. The previous thing was a long, thin, hairless brown caterpillar, with three pairs of legs at the very front and the very back, which "looped" as it went, and could raise its front end to cast about for nearby foliage. The front & back had "facets" like the hull on a Type 45 destroyer, in miniature. It was on a large leylandii cypruss I'd just cut down, so I put it in a similar conifer hedge.
.
I got all excited about it, never having seen one before, but it turned out to be common. Peribatodes rhomboidaria (Willow Beauty). |
