Just seen one, briefly, on a buddleia. Still quite rare here. Fantastic.

Jealous!

I've seen a few interesting insects over the last few summers, hurrah for global warming, or something.

Anyway, most notably I've seen a few Stag Beetles this year, I've not seen one around these parts in maybe a decade or something.

I like bugs Thumbs Up

Eww! Fecking nasty crawly barstewarts!
However it has been a pleasure to to see more butterflies this year Thumbs Up .
On the plus side of this weather and all the extra bugs that seem to be around, our local bats have been busy this year.
Sat in the back garden just after dusk last night, watching the bats get their evening meal Smile .

Grr! Jealous too. I have never seen a live stag beetle. Where? How do you find them?

When I have seen HHMs, they've been flitting (rapidly!) about on a warm evening with little wind, each time attracted by buddleia. Just waiut & watch for a small thing whizzing about at high speed and abruptly stopping at flowers.

I like bugs, too. The previous thing was a long, thin, hairless brown caterpillar, with three pairs of legs at the very front and the very back, which "looped" as it went, and could raise its front end to cast about for nearby foliage. The front & back had "facets" like the hull on a Type 45 destroyer, in miniature. It was on a large leylandii cypruss I'd just cut down, so I put it in a similar conifer hedge.

.

I got all excited about it, never having seen one before, but it turned out to be common. Peribatodes rhomboidaria (Willow Beauty).

They used to be a fairly regular sight around London suburbs, when I was a kid you could bet on seeing one or two a year at least. Dusky summer evenings tends to be the sweet spot in any case.

Had this in our garden yesterday, a Carpenter Bee, looking to make a home in the support of my carport.

My the front lawn, at my old house used to get invaded by miner bees. They burrow in to ground and nest there.

They're solitary bees so one hole houses one bee. They used to annoy the missues, but since they never really botheres us and don't swarm I used to just leave them bee.
