Hi all.

i'm struggling with charging my battery. As it stands i'm getting use out of my bike most days weather permitting. On a few occasions i've had to bump start it though. It seems to build and store enough charge from riding it to start the bike but only enough to start it first time, a bit of struggle and that's it, the battery's empty.

I've borrowed an oximiser 900 from my friend that he uses and that works. When i plug it into to permanent socket attached to the battery i get a voltage reading then below 0 amps (the charge going in). also the charger sits in maintenance mode which i know it should be in the bulk charging mode. However if i turn my ignition on or just the parking light key option the charger switches to bulk charging and pulls around 0.89 amps which seems right but it seems odd that the bike has to be on and counter productive, surely this isn't the case and my friend informs me that he doesn't have to turn his on.

I've not had the bike long so i cannot confirm the age of the battery however the bike is 2012 and only has 4500miles so i can confirm it hasnt been used a great lot and i can only assume without a trickle charger

any advise welcome, thanks.

Buy a meter
Use it
Then you'll know if you need a new battery or you have other problems

Batteries do not store power as well as when new after several years.
A reasonable charge/discharge cycle will help to get the.most life out of a rechargeable battery.

Some types are better at storing energy and some types are shite.
Lead acid batteries which are the most common type used in vehicles rely on a charge cycle.
If not cycled properly the chemical compounds in the batt e the battery change. Sometimes the change is permanent. Usually the change is normal and recharging restores normality.
A battery in a new vehicle may last for up to 4-5 years before performance drops off. It may still start the engine but cold starts and failed starts will mean the battery dies sooner.
7 years. New battery seems like good advice.

The current battery code is YTZ10S

My local Yamaha garage quoted me £85 for a gel one.

I've looked online and found a few for around £50 but the codes are MBT10ZS or YT, MG 10ZS

Is the 10ZS part of the code the only specific part I need? What does the first 3 or 2 letter mean? I tried googling it but I found a few contradictory bits of information. Apologies for being so clueless here.

Thanks

Yuasa website can advise. I would fit another Yuasa. They are proven standard fit. GEL/AGM is good. I paid about 70 notes inc. P&P for the last Yuasa I got for the thou.

Genuine Honda Yuasa YTZ10S 12V High Performance
Is a GEL/AGM battery.

That was from Padgets Honda on eBay.

Almost certain to be on original battery.
Keep the trickle charger on if not used at least weekly with the new one, and it will last another 5 years +

Agree. My MT09 hasn't tipped over 3000 miles or had its first MOT yet but is still on battery number two.
Mines not even stored outdoors. Bought the (budget) replacement battery (enduroline) from Tayna who I have used several times and will happily endorse.
Order at the start of a working week if you want it pronto.

as everyone said 7 years is too long for a battery.

But i highly recommend a battery /Alternator Tester , i have the same one in my glove box .got it 10 years ago and still works .retails around 10 usd.very small you can keep it in the bike as well.

and i keep a battery Alternator analyzier from ebay-china for 40 usd in the house.

after getting the new battery check your charging current if its below 13 vdc you will keep needing new batteries.

A quick easy way to see the condition of your battery when on NO load and at least half an hour after any use or charging. Just measure the voltage across the terminals.

This is no substitute for a load test but if it's sitting below 12v it's pretty well had it.

For batteries that you top up a hydrometer is useful but I haven't seen an unsealed bike battery for years.
