Hi,
I have a intermittent starting issues, it seems the start button does not always respond, here is list of my experiences:
1) I find that in order to get the start button to work I have to pull the rear brake handle in really hard before the start button becomes active, is this normal ? I noticed that it takes minimal travel and very light pressure of the brake handle before the brake light turns on, however this is in contrast to the start sequence that requires high pressure on the bike handle before the start buttons responds.
2) If the bike fails to start, is it normal that I have to turn the ignition off completely in order to attempt a restart or should the bike respond to multiple restart attempts as long as I have the brake lever pulled in ?
3) I have checked the foot stand and the engine does turn off as soon as I extend it, this occurs at precise point of extension, oddly after the engine has been deactivated by the foot stand and the foot stand has been retracted, the bike does respond to another start sequence without having to turn the ignition off and back on.
Thanks in advance to any help on this
Regards

There are two separate switches on the rear brake lever, the rear light only requires light pressure (you may be very gently slowing down) while the starter requires full pressure (to ensure the bike won't fly off if for some reason the clutch is engaged). It's normal to need to fully apply the rear brake.
You could try removing the handlebar cover and inspecting the switch if you think it's faulty.

No, that doesn't sound normal. The ignition sequence includes priming the fuel pump, so that's something that happens a second time, but it shouldn't stop cranking. If it's not cranking without ignition reset, I'd suspect battery voltage or the ignition relay.
You could be clearer about the failure mode. In what way does it fail to start? Does it crank but never fire? Does it seem to partially fire, but never actually take off? Does it not crank at all?
With hard starting problems, first and easiest thing to check is the battery, make sure it's not dead or dying.
After that, depending on your symptoms, I'd consider the ignition relay. It's an electro-mechanical device, the innards physically move (and make a clicking noise) when you turn it on. If it's sticky or otherwise dodgy internally, turning the ignition on and off moves a switch back and forth, possibly getting a better connection.
(I had a brand new SH300 once with a dodgy relay, it would occasionally cut out while riding down the road. Took ages for Honda to diagnose it under warranty.) ____________________ Bikes: S1000R, SH350; Exes: Vity 125, PS125, YBR125, ER6f, VFR800, Brutale 920, CB600F, SH300x4

A two-stage brake switch? That sounds unnecessarily complicated!
Also, any time anything weird happens the mantra "earthing issue" usually pops up
Is the rear brake cable operated or hydraulic? ____________________ Royal Enfield Continental GT 535, Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |
