hi all

never had panniers so maybe a couple of stupid questions.

1. can you use only one pannier or would this cause too much of an imbalance? load is likely to be 5kg max (if that) as will just be gym clothes and a towel

2. is there a soft pannier which you can simply strap under the pillion seat to one side? i dont want or need full on topbox and a kriega tail bag gets in the way as i wear a rucksack too for work and the tank bags are ok but can get in the way a bit

All the ones I've seen come as a pair . . . they straddle the bike effectively so need to be reasonably balanced. I use a set of Oxford P50R and they work well.

Have you considered saddlebags, just throw them over the seat you can also tie them down if necessary Thumbs Up

Make sure it doesn't touch the exhaust.

Also, when using throwovers, make sure they can't slip.

I didn't once and was proper glad I was going in a straight line, when one side slid into my chain and locked the back wheel Shocked

I've got some Givi soft panniers, they'll come as a pair as they will be attached by velcro (well, these are) and go under the seat.

Need to check how wide the rear end is. Didn't need anything extra on the Blackbird or K1200, but on the Fireblade they hit the indicators.

Being fabric, the contents did smell of exhaust fumes a little...

Tank bag is certainly a good option.

tbh I think saddlebags is what would make the most sense and run the attachment under pillion seat, I would probably need to get the smallest size possible (10L a side would be more than enough) - any recommendations?

Havent decided yet on the Z800 or MT09 as my new bike, on the MT09 should be fine as the exhaust is down low, on the Z800 it does come up a bit higher like my CBR so this may be an issue

You can use just one or two, it makes little difference. One of those single waterproof bicycle panniers, or even a semi-rigid small suitcases and some flat straps. Edit: At the other end of the scale you could get a Kriega "Solo" Saddlebag....

What's it going on?

Have you got pannier racks fitted, could always get a pair of universal ones fitted, then fit some saddlebag clips to your saddlebags, that can be hooked on the racks, keeping the saddlebags a little more secure, and help stop them slipping onto the exhaust

Universal pannier rack

https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Universal%2DSaddle%2DBag%2DSupport%2DBar%2DMount%2DBracket%2Dfor%2DHarley%2DSportster%2DIron%2DXl883%2DV/2170461359?iid=263140887253&rt=nc

Saddlebag clips

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Set-of-4-Saddlebag-Clips-Attaches-Luggage-to-Bag-Supports-Highway-Hawk-02-210/251983108878

I have seen them cheaper than that somewhere, but I can't remember where!! lol

Then, for panniers ..

Tailpack. Just got one for mine. Well happy with it. Was cheap too. About 14 quid.

i have both a kriega US 10 and US20, if I use as tailbag it gets in the way slightly on the CBR as I wear my rucksack (perhaps on the Zed or MT09 it wont get in the way), I have used as a tank bag but I keep finding that the straps start ripping my jeans/textiles if I move towards tank

Lomo are knocking out roll-top waterproof throwover panniers for £50. Amazing value!

https://www.lomo.co.uk/acatalog/waterproof-motorcycle-soft-panniers-set.html

I always strap a bag to the seat on top of throwovers (unless there's a pillion) to stop them slipping to one side.

I too have had the rear wheel eat a pannier at 90mph. It was very unpleasant but avoided locking the wheel due to the rear hugger. I'm much more careful how i attach them now.

that lomo magnetic tank bag looks pretty good and would avoid the straps getting in the way

Just be careful you don't get anything on the magnets that could scratch the tank paint.

it looks like you can unzip the bag from the magnet so I can just leave the magnet attached all the time

Pretty good but hard to get into when it's rolled up and on the bike if you wanted it for "ready" stuff like wallet/sunglasses.

Any of those soft panniers will be fine, use both and try to keep them fairly balanced though.

dont' need to access really, all it will have in it is my gym stuff so:
1x shorts, 1x boxers, 1x tshirt and a towel and trainers, should be able to fit in 15L?

I'd think so but their videos will probably give you the best idea of size.

cheers, I managed to fit in the US10 and apparently this is a 15L, the kriega was messing up my jeans and textiles as the straps which go under seat rubbed against them so magnetic would work better
