Right, I have some bikes in the shed , which have been off the road since before the SORN scheme was introduced, so they have never been SORNed. This is perfectly OK because they fall outside the scope of the scheme. I 've now realised all these bikes have now become T+T exempt ( which is an incentive to get them on the road, another story). So I'm going to send off the V5's to the DVLA and get the taxation class changed to ' Historic'. When I get the log books back will I have to SORN them?

Sounds like it was written by people who're old enough and has enough detail to be convincing. Wub

Yes you will. You will probably need to have them reregistered as well.
Since SORN was introduced there have been two new types of log book and the vehicle database has been updated each time. Any vehicle that wasn't taxed or SORNed didn't get their vehicle record updated. As long as you know the original reg it will be easy, DVLA will do it for you if not you might be in for a world of pain,.

If you have the log books, you should be OK for the original number plates, and you will have to SORN them if they're not insured. I don't know what happens if you acquire some sort of "ride anything" policy if such exists.

Why not ring up DVLA, have a word with someone, and report back?

I used to come home from school on a SELNEC bus, that is going back a few years now, although we were probably on new money by then.

Yes, that article makes sense. ( although things have moved on since then)

I think I will send one of the log books off, do a change of taxation class to historic request and see what happens.

Thinking about it ,I also have a tractor that came into my possesion that hadn't been taxed for a very long time. I don'y have to do SORN on that so these bikes should be OK.

I don't think I will have to re -register the bikes . Anything before about 1980 that wasn't updated onto the DVLA from the old County records was voided, ( following a fraud, that is another tale) but anything that is already on the DVLA should be OK even if dormant.
We'll see.........

I acquires a 76 bike last year with no V5 but at least a reg plate. I first had to get a 'normal' V5 then return it for re-reg as historic.. even though on the first application I tried to re-assign the class.

I just checked on lineas you panicked me and it is stated as SORN. Trouble is I can no longer remember if i did it or it was automatic, so frankly this is a rather pointless posting, like so many eminating from these fingers.

SORN if off the road and registered and if used on the road taxed. But you do not pay anything.

I thought vehicles had to have a current mot when the changed over for them to become exempt from it

mate had a right game with a 59 land rover when he tried it as it was a barn find and not been on the road for twenty years

got it through and now doesn't need one
