Looking at recovering the seat on my TDM as it has started to split. It is a shaped one like this...

Thinking about just doing it in Vinyl, any tips? Any recommendations on where to get the vinyl? The new TDM seats have a textured vinyl that is really nice. I'd like something like that.
My plan is to buy an air stapler cut cut the vinyl roughly to size start at one end and keep it tight stapling every few cm. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.
Skudd:- Perhaps she just thinks you are a window licker and is being nice just in case she becomes another Jill Dando.
WANTED:- Fujinon (Fuji) M42 (Screw on) lenses, let me know if you have anything. |

E-Bastirt have sellers who do this sort of thang.
While you're at it, order a heating elephant for under the seat too.
Cool as fcuk.
I'd link you but your google will be working by the time you read this I'm sure. ____________________ Disclaimer: The comments above may be predicted text and not necessarily the opinion of MCN. |

Are you covering the whole of it? Can't you repair the split(s)?
There's probably a plastic seat moulding under all that lot. It may have become brittle over time, so make sure it's warm when you work, and hope that the staples don't shatter the plastic (PP?).
The cover may or may not have an elasticated edging sewn on, to help during fitting, and possibly to accept staples. It's a little harder to re-cover without one of these.
The foam on the plastic seat base needs to be in good contition, with no divots or gluey proud areas, which WILL show through. You can get over these by filling, or adding a layer of 1/2" foam over the whole thing.
The seat base may have rubbed through the vinyl. Again, an extra layer of thin foam will help prevent this (but makes fitting harder).
Obviously make sure your staples aren't too long....
Vinyl is available in various thicknesses and for various duties. You want a heavy-duty rather than an indoor domestic one.
Some vinyl/Rexine has a noticeable "grain" and apart from affecting the pattern, affects the amount it will stretch in various directions.
Unsure what you intend re the sewing & detail.
You can look at shops that supply cloth material for sewing, etc. Online may be your best bet, OR actually go and see a real live upholsterer.
I very much doubt you'll get anything like perfection, and even achieving "OK" might not be very easy. That seat is a difficult shape. It'll need a lot more pulling at the sides next to where you actually sit, and rather less at the front and back; the material will tend to "lift" off the foam padding due to the shape. |
