Recently I had a slight blowing from the exhaust on my Hayabusa 2002, so I took it in to a garage. It was coming from those daft pipes that were fitted on some of the earlier Hayabusas which apparently made them a bit more environmentally friendly, but were in fact useless.

These pipes were corroded and removed, then welded over. However, over a month on, I am now hearing even more noise from the exhaust, louder than previously.

I've stuck my head in and I don't think it is the welded sections, but it might now be coming from where the downpipes connect?

I am obviously not an expert here, but I was wondering if you could take a look at those photos and see if it is glaringly obvious what the issue might be. Also, if it is just a leak, is it even worth me using some of that J-B Weld (heat resistant paste) or will that just be a waste of money you think?

Failing that If I need to get the downpipes replaced, the mechanic stated that it would be a nightmare to get them bolts off so I don't know what to do form here really

CAn you take the fairing off and get a better look? By the looks of the middle two, it wouldn't surprise me if you've blown a hole out somewhere else. Yes the bolts will be a pain but it is possible with patience and the right tools. Also if they snap it's still possible to get them out. You could opt for finding the leak and using JB weld, but you'll have to have good access to the leak to do it.

If it were me, I'd look for a used exhaust system. Look on youtube how to get old bolts out, if all else fails you'll have to DIY or look for a mobile engineering place to get them drilled out and re-tapped.

Try to do it yourself first, as a garage will charge you at least £40/hour and it might be a long job

Investigate by using a strip of paper. Have the bike running and move the paper around the exhaust until it starts moving from the blow.

It may not be the pipes it could just be the exhaust gaskets.

As for getting the nuts off get some penetrating fluid (not WD40) like PlusGas. Start spraying it ASAP on the nuts and give it a spray daily. You'll want gas torch on it to heat it up then get a decent fit socket over it and turn it.

Good advice. If it is indeed the gaskets, can I put the JB Weld over them? or would that just be a complete mess?

What's your experience with using JB Weld or the equivalent?

Also, if the current downpipes are salvageable, is it worth me getting them wrapped or should I just look at replacing them if it is indeed a rusting exhaust?

Although job weld is brilliant, I think in an environment where there is excessive heat it’ll fail. Need a higher temperature sealant....exhaust paste is good but really needs sandwiching between metals..
Those header nuts look an absolute bitch to remove.

Yeah that exhaust system looks like its close to being completely shot and probably close to going at the collector. What were allen bolts there will be a bastard too. Full expect to need someone with a welder to be able to remove the studs.

yeah does it look a bit like to you that the outer lip of the pipe has disintegrated?

Looks like I might need a stainless steel downpipe then - is eBay best for that?

Radiator, fan, fairing all needs to come off to get clearance. Maybe forks too depending on how shitty the job gets. Studs probably snap, weld blobs onto the remains and use mole grips to turn them out.

Hours of labour minimum 2, more like 4, parts are a few quid if downpipes are still ok.

If you are going to the effort of removing those studs, do a proper job and replace the whole exhaust system.
