So my 87 y/o mum, who lives alone and independently, is being plagued by spam/scam phone calls and the time has come to do something about it. Despite all the entreaties to hang up / ignore them, there have still been occasions when they've managed to extract bank details from her. Yeah, I know.

Not going to change her number, for all sorts of reasons, so was thinking about installing some sort of gadget which screens her incoming calls and only allows through what she wants to receive. Needs to be seamless and simple. Any ideas please?

The TPS is your first port of call. That stops most. My landline gets a (maybe) one dodgy call a month. If you can get her to wait for 6 rings before answering, that will weed out more.

Edit: Just had a look for interest's sake.

The problem with call blocking is that you can only, AFAICS, block individual numbers, and you don't know what they will be.

The problem with whitelisting is that long-lost friends or whoever might be inadvertently disallowed.

Hm, difficult.

It absolutely doesn't, I'm afraid - TPS only stops callers who are vaguely legit and honour it... sure as hell doesn't hold any sway with out-and-out fraudsters, especially those from overseas.

Agreed, call blocking of individual nunbers is a non-starter, as they are always different. I think some form of whitelisting has to be the only way forward, notwithstanding (eg) the problem you mention. I believe there are ways for legit callers to still get through or at the very least leave a message... this is the sort of system I was thinking about

Have a snoop around Curry's / PC World. You should be able to find a nice cordless phone with blocking built-in.

The one I have at home is set to dump all international, private, invalid and manually blocked calls to the answer phone. That plus the TPS... I get 1 or 2 dodgy calls a year.

I got my mum a similar model (with big buttons) that goes a step further. It has a "pre-call" answer machine filtering thing where you have to say who you are. If my mum picks up the phone the computer says "do you want to accept a call from <insert name here> ?"

Only crappy BT stuff, nothing special!

In my case it absolutely does.

No, pof course it does not "hold any sway" with out-and-out fraudsters. They're fraudsters!

Yes. Withe elderly people, it may have to be very carefully selected to be useful & acceptable, but a change of 'phone could work.

A big part of your problem is they're actually getting into some sort of conversation with whoever calls. Scammers and the like will then know of active lines or possible easy victims.

I've done everything possible but my elderly dad still gets into conversations with them. I've walked in and caught him telling robotic calling machines to p*ss off FFS. My Dad isn't daft but still he falls for answering those calls. I guess curiosity eats into him.

I can't help more than what's said above sorry.

Wish there was an easy answer.
I use a BT Call Blocking phone - BT8600.
There is an option to only allow through calls from numbers in the address list. Drawback obviously is legit callers not in address list cannot get through.
Also has a big button which you can press to block numbers before/during or after receiving them.
I like to bait them a little bit before pressing block. Ask THEM for their details, address, phone number, their bosses phone number etc.

I usually start with
"So, what are you wearing?"

I used to get loads, signed up to the TPS and it stopped. I maybe get one dead air call a month now.

There is only one way to stop wanker-calls and that is to ask for an ex-directory number from the phone company.

ANd fucking protect it with your life, i.e. do not give it to no cunt.
The problem is that companies are not in control of their customer phone list when they sell it on.
It's worse when you are dealing with a multi-company. They do not give a fuck about your privacy or peace of mind.

Gadgets don' du shit!

Reporting don' du shit!

Blocking the numbers Don' du shit!

I got a new ex-directory number and the spammery is now Zero.

My new number is 0141 335 6843

I often just respond with a slightly uneasy sounding "Y-e-e-s?" in response to every thing they ask me, and literally nothing else, just to see how long they'll keep going. Depending on the questions asked, it can be ages. REALLY pisses them off when they cotton on

Caller display, answerphone.

Train her not to pick up the phone. Wait for message and then pick it up if it's someone she knows.

Anyone else. Don't answer.

The snag is Freddies mum is probably from a generation that
finds it hard to concieve that people will ring you not for nice chat but
just to trick you out of every fuckin penny if they can
or at least get you to buy shit you dont need.

Unless she has a cynical, grumpy, foul mouthed old bastard like me to field her calls, it's hard to think of a foolproof protective device.
