Hi all,
Bike yamaha xj6n
Battery fully charged after a break of 1-2 months
After i tried turning it on, starter motor runs but the bike doesn't start, so after pressing for a bit (1 sec or 2sec max) i stop and then try again then again and usually after 3rd or 4th time it starts. Then throughout the day its usually normal(For example when i go somewhere leave the bike for 2/3 hours and then try to turn it on it usually starts by first press) , it happens after i leave it overnight and then try to turn it on the next day.

What could be the reason behind this ?
Spark plugs?
Starter motor dying?
or maybe something else what do you guys think?

Thanks for help!

Yes there is fuel in tank (I refilled it 3 times now) it starts works all fine but always first time after night standing it doesn't start with one click need to try 2-4 times then it rides normal and after that it starts with one click. At first I though fuel pump but it works when I turn ignition. Looks maybe like something with spark plugs but not sure
Mileage 15k, 2013 bike, last service hmm passed mot in march, oil change with filter in April.

Drain off the water from the carb bowls and fuel lines. Of course no carbs, I still thinks it's water build up , so lines and filter, also drain a small amount directly off the tank, it does not take much to give problems.

It doesn't sound that unusual for any older engine but first thought is somehow fuel system is having to be primed, perhaps a pinhole leak in the line letting air in, you might not see any drips but have a look.

This is the sort of thing that makes you wish your bike had a carb with an old fashioned 1950s 'tickler' on it. For you younguns - that was a little button on top of the carb that pushed the float down so the carb flooded. You pushed it down until petrol started coming out of a little bleed hole, kicked it once and if it had a spark plug in, it fired up. Good old days. Fuel injection....... Meeeeahh. Hate it. Always wondering when some expensive pump of computer is going to fall over. Big wad of cash goes out of wallet.

Oh Aye, and once it starts, what about the lack of performance our modern machines are over stocked with? Very Happy

There are some more basic indicators you should try.

Turn the engine over on the starter.
Can you smell petrol in the exhaust?
If it's a strong whiff of petrol then you know there is fuel going into the engine.
(Maybe not enough or even too much though.)
If no fuel smell then probably fuel system problem.

You need to get access to the plug/s or use a spare plug.
Turn the engine over and hold the plug electrode to bare metal part of the frame or the eng. block.
I assume you know the pug lead has to be connected to the plug?

Are you getting a big PHATT blue spark across the plug air gap?

If no spark or a watery red spark then you have an ignition system problem/s.

Are you twisting the throttle on a cold start up?

How old's the battery. Mate of mine started finding his bike hard to start in the morning, bike was about 3 years old so the battery probably the same age, replaced the battery and all was fine.

BTW his bike had been left a few weeks while he was on holiday and only when he got back he realised he should have disconnected the battery (or left it on a trickle charger.)
