I suppose the same could be said for the DRZ400. A fairly recent new model came out but it still only has 5 gears and the same engine performance. To be fair though the engine's reliable compared to other singles so why mess with something that works quite well.

I do like the look of the SV but have never ridden one. From what I read online I think I'd be bored within a day.

Drz is still the engine the RE Himalayan needs. SV650 isn't boring, it's bland. Ride it like you stole it and it comes to life. But, if you commute then it just poodles along like an mt07 or z650. They're winning though, have a little edge (new bike fun or quirky looks), the lumpy not boring parallel twin, wins on a boring commute. Sv650 is a good bike, just not great.

The chassis is the least offensive bit of the SV. The engine is awful, horrible V-twin fart sounds and no character to the power delivery whatsoever. Wait for something to happen, hit rev limiter, change gear. Rinse and repeat.

Can I ask how many miles your CCM has on it?

The DRZ lump has two failure points, 9k miles and 15k miles depending on tune. I'm interested to know if yours has exceeded either, as no DRZ engines bike I know of has ever exceeded these mileages without major engine work.

A 'hot' sv would be in the gsxs750 bracket. As Suzuki seem reluctant to overlap bikes in the range, it's a doubt. Sv isn't a bad bike now, it's just ok. More comfortable than mt07 or z650 for taller riders. A gixxer engined adventure was what I was hoping to see next. Maybe 750cc, 110 bhp, about 195kg wet, a real tenere beater and a rival to tiger and ktm790adv

Not quite what I had in mind, the SV650R would be very much in tune with something like this, nothing like the GSX750S. More like a 675 style sports bike, aimed at the track Day/club race series bracket. I'm not saying it would be a massive financial success, but I'm betting if they did a limited run they would sell the lot.

Not this spec level obviously, but these are the 2019 JHS supertwin bikes that put out over 100 rwhp and weigh about as much as a Tupperware container. Saying that the motor is boring when it's tuned to be a first bike after test bike is silly. More life and hp is easily obtainable, It's only cams, compression and a lighter flywheel, something the average mechanic can sort out at home. I'm sure Zuki could squeeze it out of it.

@lilredmachine - mine has an astonishing 39k miles on the engine now. It's noisy and yes could probably do with a rebuild but to be fair it runs fine, doesn't burn oil and performs OK. All of the known fixes are done - stator bolts etc.
I did think the crank was going to snap over the summer but discovered a stripped bolt on the sump guard which allowed the guard to vibrate on the frame. I removed it and sound vanished. That's one of my winter jobs to do (it's not used during the winter).

The engines were fairly good though some suffered with gear teeth crumbling. For some reason mine still goes.
You should hear this one:

The thing is, I think you're getting things out of proportion. The SV wasn't designed to be a world-beating track bike. It has been well summed up by now. A good beginners bike, a useful commuter on which you can have a little fun as long as your expectations aren't too high. Plenty of faults, but none which make it unusable. If I wanted a second bike for relatively local commuting and general use, I wouldn't instantly dismiss it.

It has just enough to suggest it would have been worth putting a little more into as has been said; give it a bit more go, improve the suspension (how many standard production bikes can you say that about? Quite a few). I think Suzuki should. Or scrap it altogether and design something new, but they don't seem to be much into that nowadays. Bikes from them with that engine do still seem to sell though, so 20 years down the line, it must have something going for it.
