Blocking scamming spamming bastard landline calls?

So my 87 y/o mum, who lives alone and independently, is being plagued by spam/scam phone calls and the time has come to do something about it. Despite all the entreaties to hang up / ignore them, there have still been occasions when they've managed to extract bank details from her. Yeah, I know.

Not going to change her number, for all sorts of reasons, so was thinking about installing some sort of gadget which screens her incoming calls and only allows through what she wants to receive. Needs to be seamless and simple. Any ideas please?

Have a snoop around Curry's / PC World. You should be able to find a nice cordless phone with blocking built-in.

The one I have at home is set to dump all international, private, invalid and manually blocked calls to the answer phone. That plus the TPS... I get 1 or 2 dodgy calls a year.

I got my mum a similar model (with big buttons) that goes a step further. It has a "pre-call" answer machine filtering thing where you have to say who you are. If my mum picks up the phone the computer says "do you want to accept a call from <insert name here> ?"

Only crappy BT stuff, nothing special!

A big part of your problem is they're actually getting into some sort of conversation with whoever calls. Scammers and the like will then know of active lines or possible easy victims.

I've done everything possible but my elderly dad still gets into conversations with them. I've walked in and caught him telling robotic calling machines to p*ss off FFS. My Dad isn't daft but still he falls for answering those calls. I guess curiosity eats into him.

I used to get loads, signed up to the TPS and it stopped. I maybe get one dead air call a month now.

Train her not to pick up the phone. Wait for message and then pick it up if it's someone she knows.

The snag is Freddies mum is probably from a generation that
finds it hard to concieve that people will ring you not for nice chat but
just to trick you out of every fuckin penny if they can
or at least get you to buy shit you dont need.

Unless she has a cynical, grumpy, foul mouthed old bastard like me to field her calls, it's hard to think of a foolproof protective device.
