I used to enjoy mushroom picking. I never ate them, but enjoyed just wondering through whatever forest with my father and brother picking them up. It was and still is a very popular pastime activity where I live.
It was never about ''getting food for free''. Whole families used to, and still do, day long trips to forests, picking up mushrooms and just enjoying the time spent outside. It's also a kind of a sport, here. But beware, some of the European countries have strict limits on how many (weight) of mushrooms you may pick per person, in one day. How would anyone know? Well, let's say you took your car to get there, then you take the car to get home and on the way how a police officer does a routine roadside check, and your car is full of mushrooms.
EDIT: Well, maybe during the WW1, WW2, middle ages perhaps, it was about getting something to eat for free.
ALSO: After the Chernobyl disaster, it was not advisable to eat mushrooms, because they pulled cesium 137, or other such elements, from the soil contaminated by the fallout. Since the UK got a nice fallout dose, I would guess that could also contribute to why people don't pick mushrooms in the UK anymore. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Yep, back in the 80's even in our small Socialist Republic were people advised not to pick/eat mushrooms after the events, as mushrooms have no stems, nor roots, so they absorb all the nutrients they need from the surrounding area and are therefore very prone to absorb above mentioned cesium 137, which is radionuclide. Which if ingested raises the risk of cancer of soft tissues.
The half life of cesium 137 is maybe 70 days, irrc. The health risks also probably depend on where the mushrooms grew and how many of them you ate, or keep eating.
Has no one in the UK issued such warning after the Chernobyl disaster?
Wiki: Caesium-137 (137 55Cs), or radiocaesium, is a radioactive isotope of caesium which is formed as one of the more common fission products by the nuclear fission of uranium-235 and other fissionable isotopes in nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Read a bit further: half-life is 30 years
Caesium-137 mostly decays by β-emission which isn't the worst thing to be irradiated by. However the Barium it decays into stabilises by gamma-ray burst which isn't great if you ingested the aforementioned mushrooms.
Note that the Polonium-210 that killed the Russian defector is no harm to anyone... if left on a shelf somewhere as α-decay can barely penetrate the skin. Only ingested can it do any damage ____________________ Husqvarna Vitpilen 401, Yamaha XSR700, Honda Rebel, Yamaha DT175, Suzuki SV650 (loan) Fazer 600, Keeway Superlight 125, 50cc turd scooter |

It says ''The biological half-life of caesium is about 70 days''.
I guess I was wrong. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Well, it was the 50's, their goal (UK/USA/USSR) was to make weapons grade uranium and that's what these reactors were mainly for and safety concerns were therefore somewhat muted. Either they didn't know better (some of the reactor designs were plain stupid, by today's standards) OR safety was not the priority.
Sharing any mishaps with the citizens, or even the world was not an option, apparently. Americans and their nuke tests, USSR and the Kyshtym disaster, the Windscale issues and downplaying the 50's accident... and who knows how many places on this planet are not safe because of such events. The USSR nuclear incidents got publicly known only because of the fall of the USSR and declassification of all sorts of documents, otherwise we would have never know.
Speaking of the Kyshtym disaster, apparently the CIA knew all about this event from the beginning, yet kept it secret because they feared that if they publicised this bit of information, it would scare the American taxpayers which would not help their own nuclear program.
EDIT: By the way, people already forgot how European nuclear facilities were putting their nuclear waste into metal barrels dropping them right into the Atlantic ocean, as they got pissed when Japan recently announced they're gonna dump the heavy water from the Fukushima facility right into the ocean to dilute it. ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ
