I've got a 122 chain which needs shortened to 106.

I'm assuming that you just push the pins out like you would do when you split a chain, but what I was wondering was; would it be OK to grind the head of the rivet off to make the pins easier to slide through?

I have ground off the heads before but the chain was never going to be used again, I was just wondering if the head created from the grinder might make the links more brittle and likely to snap, or would it be safe enough?

If I don't use a grinder and just used the chain splitter on it to force it through, it should be OK to put the new link through the same hole with it having damaged the outer surface of the chain link?

We shorten industrial chains all the time using a grinder to take the end off the pin and then using a punch to remove the pin. The heat should not be an issue as the pin you are grinding, along with the plate behind it are going in the bin anyway.
