Any one know the screw sizes on a 2001 Honda CB500 twin carb? Or anywhere I can order more screws or a kit?

Just gone to strip them down and I've chewed up 3 of the bowl screws and one of the top diaphragm cover ones, they are actually made of cheese Mad

They are VP Keihin but can't see any other markings.

I expect these will not be the only screws that bite the dust.

Try JIS drivers.

Often (but not always) JIS screws will be marked with a small dot stamped in the top and an ordinary Phillips driver will chew the shit out of them.

If you've got one of the cheap double ended blade drivers that probably came with the bike's original toolkit, the cross point end is JIS.

If not, most decent tool shops sell bit sets or drivers these days, so get some, your Jap bike screws will love you for it.

Step away from the carburettor until you have a JIS screwdriver in your hand.

If you don't KNOW it's a JIS screwdriver, it almost certainly isn't because you have to go out of your way to get them. Using a phillips or posidrive on Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screwheads will burr them because the internal angles are different.

I can highly recommend vessel brand JIS screwdrivers. The other place to get one is in the bikes own toolkit, the cheap looking one with the removable black plastic handle.

JIS screws look like a posidrive but have a "dent" stamped on the head.

Brick Wall Oh man wish I knew this an hour ago haha!

Cool ok I'll get one of them ordered now.

I'm gonna have to use the screw extractor on the chewed ones and replace them.

Found a website doing various screws but some are M4 others M5 all of varying lengths.

If you can get access to the head, a Mole grip (or equivalent) can often crack the joint and get the screw loose.

Either OE such as cmsnl.com or else measure up using a bolt gauge and try somewhere like Westfield Fasteners. OE is often more expensive singly but other places will only sell in bulk packs so you might end up paying for more than you can use.

If you do get a proper JIS screwdriver, you may be surprised how well they get a hold on even a badly burred head.

Failing that, remove the ones you can, slowly and carefully drill the heads off the totally knackered ones and lift the float bowl off. I have never failed to then simply undo the remainig stump of the drilled ones with pliers. The only thing really holding them is the compression of the joint, they aren't usually corroded in place and you can put penetrating oil in from both ends because they are through-drilled.

Do not be tempted to apply any sort of percussive force on like tapping them round with a punch, you'll snap the lip off the carb.

M5 x 16 set screw. Honda part number; 938920501600.

EDIT: You can get away with ones a fair bit longer because the threaded hole is through-drilled, it will happily stick out of the end a bit.

Just the website I needed!

I managed to find another website with exploded part diagrams and found the sizes there.

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb500-2002-2-england_model1499/partslist/

Got a vessel JIS screwdriver on its way from Japan for £7 too Thumbs Up never knew such a thing existed until today.

There are UK suppliers of them too.

However, you'll love it next time you need to undo any fairing fasteners or take the lid off the brake fluid reservoir etc.

Don't put a mole grip on the screw head.

The chewed up screws will still come out. Get yourself a small hammer and something to use as a drift. I suggest an extension rod from a 1/4" drive socket set. Hold the extension just above the head of the screw and tap the top end with the small hammer several times so that the other end flattens the screw top a bit and the cross closes up. Now tap a phillips screwdriver into the flattened cross so it forms to the shape of the phillips instead of the original JIS. Screw should now come undone.

I have these...

They are amazing, they have never failed to remove a knackered head.

I took them to a guy who works on classic bikes and he had a nightmare getting them off, but managed to do it.

Now I have a new, bigger, headache.

One of the mixture screws is stuck fast and won't budge, the groves on it have snapped off and all I have access to is the brass head in the aluminium tower. Fucking nightmare.

I saw this but need to get some needle files to try it out.

It'll stop you messing with the mixture screws. I presume they are jammed in the correct place because it's likely they haven't been touched since leaving the factory. On some US models the mixture screw adjuster is blanked off. Move on, it's highly unlikely you need to touch it, just blow through the fuel passageway.
