Dear BCF I come in search of your joint wisdom, or failing that for you to call me a worrying needlessly twat.

Yesterday whilst parked in the motorcycle section of my local multi story for about 90 minutes a gold circle has been painted on my front tyre.

I cannot think of any legitimate reason for this and the only one that I can think of (other than a local loony pre-armed with a paint pot of gold paint) is it being tagged for removal by a vanload of thieving scrotes to arrive later.

This parking space has no fewer than 6 security cameras on it and the carpark attendants are bikers so my first thought is to pop in and talk to them and see a) if its a known thing and b) if they fancy scrolling through 90x6 minutes of camera footage to see who did it.

Any thoughts ? I shall be removing the mark before I head out today and parking elsewhere, obviously....

Definitely not there on Sunday afternoon when I cleaned it. Conceivably could have been done in the 10 minutes it was parked outside Waitrose but very unlikely.

It's a manufacturer's mark showing the lightest side of the tyre and should be fitted next to the valve.

That's good service, but to be honest I'd have thought they'd have got a lot more of it done in 10 minutes.

To get it off, you could park in diesel fuel for a week or two, or to get it off quicker, use oxyacetylene (or combine the two...).

But no. What a relief, so it was indeed there from new; it's good that it's not some disgraceful scrotey thing!

I read somewhere that there are gangs of thieves stealing bikes to order.
They go around looking for bikes to steal, mark the bikes they plan to lift and then come back later in a van to take them.
They use a gold circle or a coloured dot near the tire valve to easily identify the bike later.
Shocked

I didn't know dogs had tyre valves.

Still, that's a "Whoosh!". Smile

Interestingly (or not?) I had a pair of PR4s fitted this morning, and unlike the identical tyres they replaced, there was no mark at all indicating this (the old ones had red dots). The fitter was quite surprised; but found the same on another new pair of PR4s he had in (I'd sourced and taken in my own pair myself).

Could they be fake? Where did you source them from?

Unlikely - mine were from tyreleader.co.uk; and my fitter (presumably) sourced his from elsewhere, which was why I mentioned that.

Maybe they figure they've got a consistent manufacturing process and/or it's an insignificant aid to tyre-fitting.

Is there a red mark on the opposite side of the tyre? That gold ring looks like it was done by the fitter probably so it's easier to identify where to place it in relation to the valve.

Perhaps those 'crop circle' blokes are trying a new avenue of mystery.

Hi,
Colour dot usually means point to align with the air valve (the 'lightest' part of the tyre, e.g Bridgestone yellow dot means lightest part of tyre, red the heaviest, Yokohama has slightly different markings as it depends on the rim - the rim is supposed to have own dot marking) but may also mean just quality control check. You can try to align it with the air valve but if the rim is old and worn it will make no difference as the imbalance will be mainly caused by the rim (not a circle anymore, it is almost never a circle anyways).
